Stevie Y is turning heads today IMO. Pesky Sens are not going to be an easy out.
Like what Wings have done for sure. Pens just got a year older, that is all. Bolts quietly kept quality. Actually, like the one two punch of the Leafs goalies over Campbell. Think the Oil and the Caps put all their eggs in a single basket. Avs, goalie no upgrade but do they need it? Burns to Canes? Eh, just leadership but they have enough of that. Rangers get Trocheck but lose Copp and Vatrano, don't think that is good. Actually think the Wings and Sens jumped teams like the Devils and Blue Jackets in the East. Also think Blues lost ground to the Wild, Avs and even Kings in the West.
Still...Where is Johnny going?

Really puzzling move. Took a pay cut from what the Flames offered and to a team that will not compete for years to come. You can't even say it was for the money. Closer to home? Hell, surely Devils or Flyers could have made an offer. I am just baffled by this move.

Wow why are you so bitter bro? He is sick of losing in Calgary so he moved on just like most players in the NHL do at some point. He owes them shitttt.
You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going.

My apologies. Must have been someone else on the flames I was thinking about. I still stand by the turnovers and failure to back check. Although he was better last season. The cokehead thing could go either way

Not going to badmouth anyone but it appears that the Flames GM needs to be shown the door. Something is afoul in Calgary. Maybe Fab can fill us all in but something is not going well with either the front office or the coach.

Thachuk will be an unrestricted FA after next season. He was due an offer sheet of $9MIL for next season as a RFA, but the Flames decided to file for arbitration to try and hold on to him an extra year. Interesting article from dailyfaceoff...

From the moment Johnny Gaudreau left the Calgary Flames to sign with the Columbus Blue Jackets as an unrestricted free agent last week, speculation over Calgary’s other 100-point scorer, right winger Matthew Tkachuk, began to swirl. Would Tkachuk, a restricted free agent, want out after his linemate’s departure? The buzz only intensified when the Flames opted for club-elected salary arbitration earlier this week.
Now, speculation has given way to inevitability. According to a story published Wednesday by The Athletic's Hailey Salvian and Jeremy Rutherford, sources indicate Tkachuk, 24, has informed the Flames that he will not be re-signing with them on a long-term contract. A trade is likely to happen in the coming days and weeks, the story suggests.
According to the Salvian and Rutherford’s story, Tkachuk has submitted a list of teams with whom he would agree to a long-term contract. A source indicated to The Athletic that the list includes the St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars, while the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils are on the radar, too, as teams who have expressed interest in Tkachuk. The most obvious fit from a personal perspective will be St. Louis, as Matthew, son of longtime NHLer and 500-goal scorer Keith Tkachuk, grew up there while Keith played for the St. Louis Blues.

A great article Bear, it really does explain the difficulties faced by Canadian teams, from Covid to Taxes and even the politics of hockey itself.
Canadian teams are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to monetary issues (the weakness of the Cdn dollar) as well as the tax issue.
Also as mentioned in the article the "remoteness" or lack of entertainment for these millionaire players and their families in some locations
(the prairie provinces in particular) has become another factor in player decisions as to where they will locate.
While I don't pretend to have a answer to this problem, I feel Canadian teams may have to get creative with some of these contracts.
It's been said "nothing breeds success like success", so it's easy to see why teams like Tampa can continue to keep quality players who are perhaps willing to play for "slightly" less than market to stay somewhere successful, less taxed and WARM.
All that being said, getting back to Doc's original question, I feel Detroit and Ottawa are teams that should immediately be better next year, and as for my Leafs, well time will tell on Murray , but I do think Samsonov was a good backup plan. Teams that took a step back would have to include Calgary of course, something wrong between management and players. What surprised me though was teams like NYI and NJ not really doing anything (has Lou lost his touch, is it time he stepped down and let in some new blood?)
Don't really hear much from the West Coast teams, here in our part of the hockey universe particularly teams in Cali. but I think L.A. could be a sleeper next year.
Good to see some familiar names, will try to pop in every now and then during the off season, till then:

Hey buddy...great to read your post...lots of good information and thoughts in there! I agree with everything you're saying. And for sure LA will be a sleeper and Ottawa and Detroit will be much improved. Thinking the Devils will be improved also...not sure about the Islanders.

Now they have a really good player that doesn't even want to be there lol. Most think that was a great trade for the Flames? What? Tkachuk is signed for 8 years in Florida and Huberdeau will be lucky to make it through one season in Calgary if he plays at all. The Flames maybe should have talked to him before the trade to at least see how he felt about it. Flamers joke of a franchise, some things never change.
