Does anyone else think that this year is completely wide open? I mean every team you guys have listed has question marks.
I think that after the obvious choices of Pittsburgh and Washington, that Yes, it's wide open. The playoffs are a different beast than the regular season so that's why my picks are Chicago over Ottawa.

Washington does have a shot, just not with Theodore... if Varly can regain his form from earlier this year before he got injured, they will be ok. It all depends on what George McPhee does at the trade deadline next week to improve what's in front of the goalies. My Caps have a shot IF.... we go out an get a defensive defenseman or two, somebody that can clear bodies from the crease. We're not going to get an elite #1 defenseman at this point. I'm hearing Sutton from NY Islanders, Hamhuis from Nashville, etc. The problem is that all other teams are looking for defensive help, so there's going to be a bidding war and teams will have to overpay on these deadline trades. Roloson from the Islanders is also a possibility for goaltending depth. I've heard he also wants someone for the second line as well, Tkachuk from the Blues for a pick is rumored.

Seriously...watch out for the Canucks in the playoffs. They haven't had much recent success in the playoffs, but they are built for a deep playoff run. Great goaltending, a defensive first system, and the Sedins...what more do you need?
But seriously...once they sign Peter Forsberg they are going to be all set for a run.

Looking to put in a futures bet in the NHL. I dont follow hockey at all. Not really looking for value but looking for the best team to put it on. Who will win?
1st thing...you should wait until the trade deadline is over on March 3rd then make your choice
2nd thing... which country wins the gold medal at the olympics. with only 25 games or so left in the NHL schedule a gold medal can give a few players a lot of confidence in their game and propel them to play hard to keep that winning feeling
dont pick chicago, they have the Marian Hossa curse
dont pick new jersey, brodeur just lost all confidence in himself by playing like a fucktard at the olympics
dont pick San Jose, They won't make it past the 1st round
Thus leaves you a few teams to pick from - CAPS, PENGUINS, SENATORS, KINGS, CANUCKS
Washington Capitals will definatly be a HUGE cup contender in the EAST unless they lose in the 2nd or 3rd round to the Penguins then it'll switch over to pittsburgh to repeat but as of now Washington is the better team and they want it more.

I'm a Penguins fan BUT I don't think they get it done this year. outside of Fleury in goal and Crosby, Malkin and Staal down the middle, we get pretty thin on the rest of the team. really don't have a top "sniper" winger and the D is suspect. we were VERY lucky to get past the Capitals in last years playoffs and IF Fleury wasn't absolutely UNREAL in games 6 & 7 of the last years finals, it would have been a re-run of 2008.
San Jose is way overdue to win it
did you see how Joe Thornton once again CHOAKED in a big game against the US in the Olympics? same with Patrick Marleau. I think it will be typical Hosersharks again THIS season. win the west and maybe even the Presidents trophy THEN get beat by a hot 8th seed like (probably) the Red Wings just like they did last year against the Ducks.
Ottawa Senators
right now they are the hottest team in the league and playing GREAT two-way hockey. a month ago they were 20-1 to win the East and 40-1 to win the Stanley Cup. NOW down to 10-1 and 20-1. question is, can they continue and would Elliott be able to stand the pressure of the playoffs?
Senators are probably the BEST "long shot" on the board with a legit chance to pull it off.
to me, the "obvious" plays are the Capitals @ 9-5 to win the East and 4-1 to win the Cup and Blackhawks @ 5-2 to win the West and 6-1 to win the cup.
question for the Capitals is does their D & G hold up although, like my Penguins in the early 90's, they score so damn many goals they can probably overcome a marginal goalie. Bhawks pretty much have it all BUT IF the Red Wings make it to the playoffs and are 100% healthy ANY team in the west will have to get by them.
(which leads us to....)
the other "long shot" with a legit chance, the Red Wings @ 12-1 to win the West and 25-1 to win the Cup. OK, right now they are out of a playoff spot BUT close and are getting healthy. I would expect them to get in and IF they DO, they have the experience and skilled players to go all the way IF Howard and Osgood are half way decent in goal.
a Senators vs Red Wings final? to quote Judy Tenuda, "It Could Happen!!!"

Not much value in the Futures odds, unless you bet them 2-3+ Months ago...
You now would be Much better off betting the Teams you Like to Win Series by Series
It is if you can manage to parlay it with another event your pretty confident with, say you got the Pens at 7/1 with just say a 2/1 bet right their youve bumped it up to 14.00.
