I've had a good laugh lately at all of the people saying that Sidney Crosby has been invisible in the finals up until game four. On ESPN the other day they had a fan quote on the front page that said "Sidney Crosby must be an acronym for invisible". It was a weak joke but most of all it was a ridiculous statement.
I'll assume that quote came from someone who only checks the boxscore the next day and says that if he didn't record a point then he must not have played well. I would like to think that a real hockey fan would know better.
For those of you who are new to the game of hockey or those who refuse to watch the entire game please realize that you don't have to score a goal to have an impact on a game.
You may or may not agree that Crosby is the best player in the game but trust me when I tell you that other teams focus their game plan on stopping him. He is the smartest offensive player in the game and at any moment he can create an offensive chance for himself or someone else.
During the first two games in Detroit Crosby may not have scored but he was creating plenty of chances for himself and his teammates. A few unlucky bounces and some great defensive plays were all that stopped him from getting on the score sheet.
Lets not also forget that he has been doing this with arguably the best two-way forward in the game covering him. Henrik Zetterberg is not just a great offensive talent, he is also one of the best in the game at shutting down opposing teams' offensive stars.
As we have begun to see in the last two games Zetterberg's assignment may be starting to get to him physically. He looked tired during most of game four. It looks like the extra ice time as well as the difficult task of shadowing Crosby may be catching up to him.
With Pavel Datsyuk out of the lineup Mike Babcock hasn't had the luxury of allowing both his stars to share in covering the Pens top stars. They seem to have decided on trying to limit Crosby as much as possible. This has allowed Evgeni Malkin to get good matchups throughout the series which he has taken advantage of. Call it the "Crosby Effect".
Look for Babcock to make some adjustments for game five to try and slow down Malkin as well as Crosby. A Datsyuk return would be a big help at this point. But whether or not Datsyuk returns look for Detroit to be more focused defensively.
Pittsburgh won't find it as easy to score at the Joe so look for game five to be a tightly contested affair likely to go under the total, currently 5.5 at Pinnacle.
Good luck,

faceoff- How can you take it personal that people make a nickname for him? This is still sports right? You can have enemies?
And to make your point, I agree more than anything that having pts on the board is not the definition of making an impact. There is no other complement in sports when your rivals go out to build teams just to stop you. ( I.E. The Blind side in Football)

Hey man, it will happen in every sport. If you are that good, or on a team that most don't like, or Just don't look like a lumberjack, thats what you get.
I understand what you mean in this place, I saw 1st hand how people will attack you if you lose a bit or just say it how it is against there team.
And you must fade my baseball picks, cause no one likes me in here

Can anyone else remember an NHL player as ridiculously gifted as
Crosby
act like the childish buffoon as he does? I'm talking about the
tapping Maltby's legs after Game one was over and the dumb-ass slashes
tonight, esp. the one on Zetterberg - - I never saw Gretzky, Lemieux,
or
Yzerman pull this crap. He's never going to get complete respect as
long as he loses his cool like this. There is a reason he finished
like 6th in an NHL players poll recently on who the NHL's best player
was. I think Datsyuk was voted ahead of him.

I always cite this example but Mario at the end of the 2001 ECF vs NJ . He slashed Madden 3 tiimes and cross checked him in the back at the end of game 5 and ended the series in the box.
Yzerman never did stuff like that...I remember him at the end of gm 4 in 1995 just sliding the puck down towards the Devils end and skating back towards his net as time ran out

Not to take this off topic, but Lemieux got a lot of the same criticism that Crosby gets. Possibly even worse at times. He threw a few childish fits during his career.
Here's a snippet from a '92 Sports Illustrated article about Mario's apparent diving:
"
Keenan accused Lemieux of repeatedly taking pratfalls after incidental contact with opposing players. “I can’t respect Mario for diving,” Keenan said. “The best player in the game is embarrassing himself and embarrassing the game.” The aroma of sour grapes was unmistakable: Chicago defenseman Steve Smith had been called for hooking Lemieux with 18 seconds left in Game 1, and five seconds into the subsequent power play Super Mario flicked a rebound past Blackhawk goaltender Ed Belfour to win the game 5-4. It was a crushing defeat for Chicago, which had led 4-1 in the second period.
“I actually didn’t dive that time,” Lemieux said. Other times, many other times, he has tumbled to the ice hoping to attract a sympathetic whistle. Early in his career Lemieux was excoriated behind his back by opposing players, coaches and front-office types who saw his flopping as unseemly behavior for a would-be superstar in a sport that likes its rough edges razor sharp. After Lemieux led the Penguins to a Cup, the criticism faded, only to be revived by Keenan in a pointed attempt to influence the referees in a series that, from Keenan’s perspective, had already gone awry.
As usual, Lemieux played it close to the sweater. “No comment,” he said after scoring the winning goal in Game 2. a 3-1 Pittsburgh victory. Then he smiled and added, “For now.”
The Chicago camp insisted later in the week that no disrespect to Lemieux had been intended. “We don’t mean to cast anything negative toward Mario,” said Darryl Sutter, the Blackhawks’ associate coach. “We’re just asking the question, Is there another set of rules, unwritten rules, that are there for Mario and Mario alone? Based on what we’ve seen in this series, the answer is yes.”"

Some good points here guys but lets not forget that there have been a lot of great players who have taken some slack for things they have done on the ice. Gordie Howe and Mark Messier loved to throw some bows. Even Lemieux and Gretzky took a dive or two in their day. It happens, get over it.
What we need to realize is that these guys are in the spotlight every time they step on the ice so nothing will go unnoticed. So what if Crosby slashed someone. It's called frustration. Kirk Maltby has been going around slashing guys all series but we're not talking about him now are we.
Just because you are a great player doesn't mean that you are perfect. I'm not saying that Crosby is innocent at all but he puts up with more shit than anyone in the league. So if he gets frustrated on occasion then so what, they guy is only human. Oh and don't forget that he's only 21 years old.
People are haters and just like Kobe Bryant, Crosby will always have those who just look for ways to shit on him. You don't see as many people bitching about how Ovechkin runs people every game because people accept that it happens and move on. For some reason all the Crosby haters just love to bitch and whine about anything.

1. You act like I'm the only one who bitches about Crosby. Give me a break. Sorry to hurt your feelings.
2. I couldn't ever play in the NHL - boy, you got me there.
3. I have played plenty of ice hockey but have never played "minor"
hockey, whatever the hell you think that is. And I was never anywhere
near talented to play anything beyond rec league hockey. So, I guess
that disqualifies me from bitching about Crosby.
4. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Crosby - - plenty of people do it.

Some good points - - agreed on Maltby. But he's not a star. Stars will always get more crap for doing stuff like that. I hear plenty of people complain about Ovechkin, not sure why you don't hear those complaints. Howe was a dirty player - - I think even he acknowledges that. So was Bobby Clarke.

JT - - he is not as good as a "two-way" player as Datsyuk or Zetterberg. You don't agree with that ? Offensively, yes, he is sickly talented along the lines of Gretzky and Lemieux.

Crosby may not be as good defensively, but the blind statement was that he does not play both ends of the ice. That may apply to OV, but certainly not Sid.

What do you see happening Tuesday night ? I know it's hard being a fan, but if you could be objective, how do you see it ?

So what was the adjustment made, besides getting the lead and watching the inevitable meltdown?
87 plays zero on the penalty kill, and is hit or miss to be out there when the other team pulls their goalie. Zero SHG for his career! Find me another all-time great who never kills penalties? Even a guy like Kovalchuk kills penalties!
So he plays 20 minutes a game at 5 on 5 or better, including 75% of the Pens power play time in this series. And for all that he has 1 G, 2 A, with three scoreless games. He's getting his lunch handed to him, period.
On top of that he has no real shot besides a backhand. Most overrated player in the NHL. A cross between Dino Ciccarelli's grinding skills with Adam Oates desire/skill to pass. Pretty good skill, but no one is building shrines for them.

20 minutes of 5 on 5 with the majority being with Kunitz, Guerin, Gil & Scuderi. Wings basically have their best 5 on the ice against him at all times with a constant shadow. Hardly getting his lunch handed to him.

I see no reason to think that Fleury & the Pens do not rebound from their poorest performance since the Philly game 3. They won game 4, 3-1. They have been much too resillient to think they will lay down. I think they win a tight 3-2 game. They are 9-3 after a loss in the recent playoff era. The Wings got a boost with Datsyuk, but that was as much the Pens playing poorly as the Wings playing well IMO. I think it is a coin flip to see a game 7 and then who knows. .
