The Hurricanes have been strong for years now. They’ve made the playoffs eight years in a row and won at least one round every time. They’ve made the conference finals four times and this time finally won it. The difference this time around may very well be the Danish star who scored both goals for the Hurricanes in the 1st period, Nicolaj Ehlers. After spending his first decade in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets, Ehlers signed last summer for 6 years and $51 million.

The Hurricanes have got to be hungrier than the Golden Knights who just drank from the Cup three years ago. The Knights still have 11 players from that team and 3 more who’ve played for a Stanley Cup winner. 

If Vegas loses this series, the season was still a success thanks to the unexpected long playoff run. If Carolina loses, it’ll be another bitter pill. The desire to AVOID having to swallow that bitter pill is every bit as strong a motivator as the thrill of winning the Stanley Cup itself.
