Why are the nhl goalies constantly on their knees? Player shoots from centre, he’s on his knees, puck is behind the net he’s on his knees sliding back and forth from one post to the other isn’t that the reason for skates? Oops puck over shoulder, goal! Shot from point same again over shoulder, goal, same from slot guy drops before shot is even taken….
Being a ex- goalie drives me nuts…. Maybe I just notice it more for that reason . Would never see goalies doing that in the old 6 team nhl.
Feel better now….

Going to have to show my age but butterfly style was started by Hawks Glenn Hall if I’m not mistaken… I wld say Hall, Crozier and then Esposito.
Goalies are just on their knees trying to stop puck not even the butterfly style. Dropping way too soon. Just my opinion of goaltender’s this day and age….

Loved Hasek he was a pure reaction goalie , all reflexes. Todays goalies are so much bigger and I think that leads to a style where the idea is just to cover as much net as possible and use the pipes for as much mobility as you can. The butterfly while effective is so hard on the knees of these big goalies that it's not sustainable. Shooters adapt to any changes that goalies make and that may be why we're seeing these over the shoulder goals?
