“I think they (the Maple Leafs) should make the playoffs,” (we will see)
Cherry expects the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks will be teams to watch this season, while the Stanley-Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks will take a step back, having got rid of too many players during the offseason to stay under the league’s salary cap. (see "Blackhawks a re-run of the 2004 Lightning?")
“It’ll happen in Winnipeg,” he said. “I would say Phoenix will be the team. If you’ve watched Coach’s Corner, I’ve guaranteed within two years, Phoenix will be in Winnipeg. They have to go. They’ll never draw in Phoenix. They had a winning team this past year and they still didn’t draw. They can’t do much better than they did, to make the playoffs and still not draw. So they will be in Winnipeg and they’ll jam them in there.” (makes sense BUT, with Bettman running the league, that would be TOO logical)

his predictions are usually spot on - and winterpeg will probably get a team soon. but that comment about the leafs making the playoffs made me laugh. had an argument with a leaf homer today because he said the same thing.

I have no idea if the Leafs will make the playoffs or not. I think they are vastly improved and the back end and tending may be enough but that offence still isn't very strong. That being said I don't see much of a difference between Toronto and Montreal. A lot of "experts" have the Habs making it but I'd say their tending and D is more suspect than the leafs.
The Leafs were 4 games above .500 following the Olympics and that's without the new additions and a healthy Komisarek which should make it a very tough defence to suit up against. It only took 6 games above .500 to make the playoffs last year so on paper it's pretty much 50-50.
I took the Leafs to make the playoffs off a buddy that gave me +500 odds so I'm pretty happy with my chances.

I don't think the current Leafs team has a chance, but if they ever manage to trade Kaberle for a good top-six forward and maybe sign another decent forward (Guerin?), they have a shot at sneaking in.
At a quick glance, only Pittsburgh, NJ, Washington, and Philly are what I'd consider definite playoff teams. Boston and Buffalo can probably be thrown in there too. That leaves a bit of room for some relatively bad teams to get in.

"decent forward" and "Guerin" don't belong in the same sentence anymore. he's over the hill (so maybe the Rangers would take him?).
according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ray Shero just gave "Geezer" his walking papers. the guy couldn't hit a half empty net from 5 feet last season and that was playing on Crosby's line.

Big difference unless you think Colby Armstrong is a difference maker. Oh, that truculence!!
I give the Habs the advantage on offence but I give the Leafs the advantage on D and in net so that's why I don't feel there is much of a difference.
As for the D you pointed out, Komisarek had a bum shoulder and in a physical sport that is one of the worst injuries to have, Beaucheman was pretty crap the first half of the year but he was playing minutes and in situations that were not suitable for his skill-set. He played much better after Phaneuf came along. And I would not consider Schenn's season a disappointment. He's only 20. Just because the media thinks that doesn't mean its true. They thought the same of Jack Johnson and Bouwmeester after their first few seasons as well.

Toronto has no chance at the playoffs and if Burke were smart he would have traded kaberle when the guy will walk for nada at the end of the year. No trade deadline deal when Tomas has the clause just as in past years.
Yet, Burki doesnt want another top 2 draft pick for Boston so hes sticking to his (meagre) guns! Montreal is a mess but Toronto's is bigger.
Komisarek, Finger and Beauchemin are complete busts. Schenn was a failure last year. They have no depth at any forward position and their draft hopes are gone after the "trade" Yikes,
How can you say that Komisarek is a complete bust when he played around 30 games last year and he wasn't close to 100% in most of those.
You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going.

Leafs have one goal scorer: Kessel and a bunch of hacks. A slow defense and average goaltending. Only Cub fans are more pathetic in delusional thinking.

As a lifelong Cubby's fan that's an insult, but the Cub's are a different story. The Leaf's are well the Leaf's and the only way they get to the playoffs are if they buy tickets.
As a liflong Cap's fan I've suffered through decades of futility, so I have empathy for all the Leaf's faithful. The only advice I can really give is just enjoy the fact that hockey is coming back soon.
No matter what team you're a fan of, here's to a great and profiable betting season to all.

God bless the faithful fan of any sport. The support is GREAT, the outlandish comments get tiresome. Accept your team for what they are. Edmonton DID NOT draft Wayne Gretzky Jr., and the Leafs WILL NOT make the playoffs. Remember: If you put a dress on a pig, it is still a pig. Here's to a long and entertaining season.

Amen Flyersfan27, you may be my sworn enemy on the ice but here's to a profitable season for everyone and to putting the unrealistic comments to rest.
