I'm not trying to be a wiseass, but I'm really wondering about the indigenous angle. Is this really a big issue in Canada? Was this a display to make the Europeans feel better?

I was just thinking as an American that if we had a similar opening ceremony, it would be a total joke.

i was thinking if that was held in the US, I'd be laughing my ass off..The Native Americans represent maybe 1/10 of 1% of the US & then you make them go out and dance for 2 hours straight. Wasn't taking their land & breaking treaties for 200 years enough?

You Americans are so self centered!!! that's why the world hates your arrogance. The Native people whose traditional territories were Vancouver & Whistler. so yes they were a big part of the ceremonies. These opening ceremonies were planned for years to show the World what Canada has to offer.... and British Columbia has totem-polls everywhere. because we respect our Natives homeland. Thats why there were 4 massive totem-polls showing the world were "taking them in with open arms"

instead of bitching about our Aboriginal people.. how about you  respect Canada for trying something different & unique

BeeRAD, I'm really not meaning any disrespect. As I said from the get-go, I was just wondering how you Canadians viewed your Aboriginal people. Was it a PC gesture or heart-felt? If that was held in the US, believe me it would've been a PC gesture. Obviously, you believe that it was more heart-felt in Canada.

I watched the rest of the ceremony today, & it kicked-ass. Good luck in these Olympics to our friends to the North.

The ceremony started like 3am in the morning here and I had a seminar at 10am, so obviously I did'nt watch it. But after reading this thread I might have to download or stream it to get my own opinion about the show. Some of you seem real passionate about it.

Overally, I definitely give it a big thumbs up!

Canadians are getting feisty. I like it. It's OK to show some emotions.

I'd love to visit Vancouver... and sample their best resources if you know what I mean.

I watched the ceremonies, and I think that a lot of things didn't translate that well on TV. I found the pace extremely slow. The mood was really subdued, which a lot of times comes across as boring. The whole part with the girl running along the prairies, was way too long she wasn't doing anything different but we had to wait for her to finish lighting up the whole floor. Seems like everything was just drawn out.

But I have no doubt that Vancouver will rock the whole Olympics. It's my favourite place to visit in Canada.

What is missing from this conversation is a reference to the immense challenge that David Atkins and his team faced in producing that spectacle in an aging facility with multiple technological hurdles.
I have been inside that building many times and was extremely skeptical at what they could possibly do to make the venue fit the bill. I was blown away at the transformation they were able to achieve. It was a tremendous celebration of Canadian culture and achievement. Filled with respect and dignity for all humanity. Made me proud to be Canadian.
