The 49ers are not constructed to be a high power team. They have Frank Gore (4 consec. 1000 yd seasons), some defense, great kickers when healthy, no special teams.
They also didn't have dick for WR or TE until a few things happened-Vernon Davis started playing like the #6 pick he was (he'll make the Pro Bowl), and the stupid fucking Raiders passed on Crabtree to take Delirious Wayward Bey. True, he held out like a dumb MFer, signed for the same money they offered in August, and in two games had more catches than DHB had ALL YEAR. Sprinkle in Josh Morgan, coaching staff willing to spread things out, and the Niners are an improved team. Do they need help on the OL? Yes, and what people are hoping here is they use BOTH 1st round draft picks they have on the O line.
Where does this leave Alex Smith? Did he have 4 balls batted down? Yes. Does that sound like the Oline was fully engaged with trying to hold their blocks?
Is he the best qb out there? Top Ten? No. But can you win with him? Yes. You can make numbers make him look bad (Charlie Frye went 26/45 333yds, you want him?), but the Niners are not a team driven by their qb. Joe Montana, Steve Young, hell Jeff Garcia (he broke both their single season single records, you can look it up) don't live here any more. Next year will mark the first time in 157 years the Niners DON'T change Off. Coord, FOR ONCE! It has been hoped for several years that stability and the same playbook two years in a row would help ANY quarterback...................
