I remember around this time last year, everybody was hyping Kevin Durant as the next big thing in the world of basketball.
They guy had a great college career, winning numerous player of the year awards, and even led his team to the NCAA tournament.
People were debating that he should have been the #1 pick in the draft and actually thought Portland made a mistake choosing Greg Oden.
Durant had a great summer playing with the USA National Team and people thought he would do well in the NBA?
Where are all the supporters now? Durant was the most hyped rookie coming into the NBA since LeBron James. The difference between the two is that LeBron lived up to the hype during his rookie year, Kevin Durant so far has not.
I think Durant will eventually be a great player but I just thought it was funny how basketball "fans" these days are so fickle.

Orlando isnt solid right now? They are winning numerous road games and have sustained the high level of play unlike years in the past when they have fallen apart. Not to mention their starting lineup is relatively young. Could be together for years. I'm not saying its a given they win anything except for their division this year, but how can you say they are not solid?

Durant will be an amazing NBA player, there's no doubt in my mind. Lebron's rookie year numbers were not that good, he looked impressive, but he definitely didn't come out of the gates as an All-Star. Granted, we expect a little more out of Durant because he had that extra year in college.
But man, wait until February or March to judge Durant. He's going to be a beast by the end of his rookie year. He has a lot to learn, he has god awful teammates, and an even worse coach. They're not using him correctly at all, on offense or defense. He needs to spend more time in the perimeter on both ends, he should be starting at forward instead of guard.
Is there any doubt, even if he's not playing up to full expectations, that he's the best rookie in the NBA this year? Who's even close besides Al Horford?

In fairness to Durant, Seattle traded away their top best players, of which could have served as mentors to the young fella.
But Seattle did make the right move in letting Rashard Lewis go. Lewis's contract is probably the worst one of the worst current deals in the NBA.
Good luck trying to build a solid team in Orlando, Magic fans.
LMAO what a joke...so if the MAGIC didnt sign him, them someone else would have signed him to the same contract. He might not be a MAX player but when your the best FA available people are going to pay MAX dollars, whether its the MAGIC or CLEV...someone would have PAID him...and oh yeah MAGIC are ballin right now so it must be paying off...

hustle_man is on CRACK...the MAGIC big 3 are signed for at least the next 5 years...tell me in 2 yrs how bad a move LEWIS was....Good luck trying to build a solid team in Orlando, Magic fans. LMAO
I forgot 14-3 withthe 2nd best record in the league is not solid...9-1 on the road, let me guess, its a flook, and BOSTON made the wrong moves too...how could they trade for the BIG 3, they are so old and washed up, that will be the heading of your next post...

I like Orlando against anyone, they play 3 times - orlando takes two outa the three.

Again... I love it how people love to make assumptions about a team based on the first month of the season. Why is it that the average no knowledge fan, like abcs/vinceyoungmvp, have the worst memories?
Orlando Magic team record after 17 games:
2007-2008: 14-3 2006-2007: 13-4
A one game difference. I expect them to finish much better than last year but the fact remains they overpaid for Rashard Lewis. They overpaid for Jameer Nelson. They made a very good trade acquiring Brian Cook and Maurice Evans. Tony Battie being out hurts them because I'd rather have Dwight Howard at PF instead of C.
I like their acquisition of Stan Van Gundy as coach, but lets be real. They are still not a top 4 team in the East. Their PG play is weak (Arroyo is better than Nelson) and Howard's offensive game has a long way to go before it even becomes decent.
I'm hoping Ewing can help him develop something other than a dropstep and dunk because he's a great help defender and probably the best rebounder in the league.

I wasnt bashing Durant at all. I think the young fella will be great. The dig wasnt at him but the false "fans" around here.
Durant is a SF/PF and I think it's a joke he's playing SG. He's still able to score the ball but his main weaknesses right now are he is too weak physically, his ball handling is not good, and the game seems to move too fast for him at times.
His FGA/Assist ratio is one of the worst in the league. His shot selection is horried and It's a shame they dont have a talented player that can show him the ropes, as I think that will hinder his development.
His coach is average and his team sucks. Non of his PGs are starting material so it makes it tough for him as well.
To say he'll be a beast by the end of the season is a stretch. I would say by the end of NEXT season.

No one else was looking to pay Rashard Lewis a max contract, let alone Cleveland who is a solid $12 million over the cap.

Just like they paid Varejao? Just like they were 13-4 after 17 games last year?
Typical response of why there can never be any intelligent basketball conversation on covers. Too many morons.

Because the Fakers have a winning record with Odom back?
Because Odom is still playing hurt?
Sorry to see your dumb ass coming into this post but it does provide comic relief being that you are the dumbest basketball mind since Coach Kimball from Celtic Pride.
And to answer your question... If you had a choice between building a franchise around LeBron James and Dwight Howard, you'd have to be an idiot to not take LeBron James. I would list the reasons why but I dont want to get a cramp.

He's showing all the typical rookie shortcomings. We're definitely in agreement that the rest of the roster sucks and Carliesimo is using him wrong. I know he doesn't have the frame to play in the perimeter for too long, but I think he has the athleticism and (pardon my cliche...) length to last in there. They need to let him loose, posting up on the high and low blocks on offense, and protecting the rim on defense. I can't wait to see what happens when someone, be it PJ or another coach, figures out how to use him correctly.

I AGREE with this. Too much love for the Magic and we aren't even out of the month of November. Dwight doesn't have an offensive game yet and their coach is Stan.

Im interested to see how his lack of strength will play out down the stretch. I wouldnt be surprised if he has to sit out towards the end of the year because of a nagging injury caused by how frail he is.
In college, you're only going to play 40 games maximum icluding pre-season if you go all the way to the title game. And even through all that, non of those games will have the intensity an NBA game will have.
Durant's poor rebounding numbers and shooting percentages are the main thing I'm concerned with right now. He's obviously getting to the foul line and his D is weak (which is expected from a rookie) but I dont like how he's being used.
They traded away their top players to build around him and now they play him out of position? Why? It doesnt make any sense.
This situation is similar to Toronto when they drafted Chris Bosh and he started his entire rookie year at center. The only difference was they had an established player (Antonio Davis) at PF. Seattle, who do they have? Damien Wilkins?
