Betting is FULL off randomness.FULL OF IT.....

Save your money, take your GF out to dinner, buy yourself a nice shirt, by your parents a gift..instead of putting your money to chance......

First and foremost, it's called gambling brother.  I find your notion of taking your GF out to dinner to be a waste of not only your money but also your time which compounds the problem.

After reading some comments here, i am ultimately convinced 95% on Covers are really insane... big time....

I want to you to argue against these points, and if u do, then i will politely go away....

    1. When u bet on a team, u ASSUME the team u bet will TURN UP on the day. How do u know for a FACT they will turn up? Do u know the players? Do u know the trainers, the coach? The answer is NO. If u picked correctly, u were LUCKY that u picked then the day they turned up. The very next day they can easily not turn up. I remember a quote by Josh Smith after a game last year, "we just didnt turn up today". Case closed.

    2. The fixed issue. There are some people here who think games arent fixed. Well i have raised this point several times and NO ONE HERE has responded to it. Funny that. Here it is again.

You had an NBA REFEREE who was caught - Tim Donaghy (hey, Danny Schayes, was he caught or was that in my head, i was imagining it). he got caught. Who caught him? Stern? No, The NBA? No. It was the FBI. How did the FBI catch him? Were they tipped off? NO. They came accross him by accident. oh i see, by accident. The FBI were investigating another case and came accross him by accident.

Then David Stern comes out and says he was the only one, no one else. lets see, how does Stern know? Did he catch Donaghy? mmmm, no...Did he walk up to each ref and say are u fixing games?

What is very very clear is this. The NBA DO NOT have the effective internal procedures and protocols to detect fixing by referees. It is one of the most difficult things in the world to catch.'

So Stern never caught Donaghy, the FBI came across him by accident, yet we will all believe Stern that no one else is doing it, cause after all, he knew about Donaghy'scam that he performed for years...oh wait...

I challenge anyone to debate against my points, particularly the second point.......

But hang on, lets continue to believe Stern.

People who bet on the NBA, PUPPETS OF STERN....

I disagree that it is chance.  Everygame has its own story.  miami has been playing bad lately and hawks have been playing great...hawks +the points would have been a logical and great play tonite.

No shit its full of randomness. Why did you waste 10,000 posts talking about it then? Baseball is more random than basketball, hence Albert Pujols crushing one into the gap and the next at bat hitting it just as hard right at the center fielder. You sound like you should be buying yourself a nice shirt

Rostos, you are right to suggest people go play blackjack instead.  This is gambling, limited "skill" involved.  I haven't done the research but I imagine people are drawn to sports betting for a number of reasons:

    1) The money they assume they can make
    2) The belief that since they have been fans of sports forever, that somehow we understand the game better than the bookies who set the lines with the intent of ensuring they make money

Human beings are proud, we like to think we have control, we like to think we are smarter than others.  In the case of sports betting it is a double edged sword, we do NOT have control over the outcomes and we are NOT smarter to out run the juice we need to pay in order to be successful.

In regards to the belief by some that sports is rigged and/or corrupt.  I am sure there are some elements of cheating, maybe even more than I could imagine.  Where money goes, so do those trying to manipulate to get a hold of it. I do believe though, that the vast majority of these odd outcomes are chance.  Sports lines are very tight, this is because 95% of the information that is out there is considered in the line (past performances, match-up, average outcomes, probability of a particular outcome etc.) the rest is determined by the betting patterns.  This almost assumes that the other 5% is provided by the bettors themselves (if EVERYONE thinks one outcome is going to happen, there must be some reason for it, simply adjust the line to ensure we win on either side).

There will be some games that bookies will lose, and even some days, but in the long run, the bookies make money, in theory, the longer the timeframe and the more bettors they have, the better the chance of their success.

I will say this.  There are extreme examples that always cause me concern...for instance, Brady managing the clock in the 4th quarter the way he did when down by 10 points.  It defies logic to most and even suggests that maybe something was amiss, but there is alot we don't know.  For instance, was Brady truly afraid to stand in the pocket out of fear?  Did the coach over-estimate how much time they might have to recover the ball and score again?  Hell, did Brady simply think, like alot of us, that he was smarter than the Jets and he could out-think their strategy?  That last point brings me back to some of the reasons we bet btw, we are all smarter than the bookies just as Brady thinks he is smarter than any team and defense coordinator.  Neither of these statements is true, but we like to think they are.

The way I see it, sports betting is a perfect cash cow for the bookies.  There is a reason there are so many successful sites out there, it is in effect the right to print money.   I know I won't stop making bets, but I also know I am not going to risk my home to try and score the "big one".

    I agree mate......

My second point that i made at the top of this post is a perfect illustratiom of how naive people are when looking if there is any cheating happening.....

How do people still believe Stern when it was quite clear that he nor his organisation have effective controls to detect any corruption amomgst its ranks.....How?

Is there a term for someone who hates other peoples threads yet continues to enter them?

Is there also a term that says there is no luck involved then a few threads later says u will need luck to win your bet...

No wonder 99% of people on here lose...they dont know what they are doing..they say one thing, then do the opposite a minute later..

Funny how some people on here say that there is nothing untoward going on in the NBA yet have never responded to my point 2 which i have posted several times on here......

So u KNOW Iguodola and Brand are gonna turn up tomorrow?

What if they dont? They have done it several times.....

What if the Magic have a rare 3 point blitz that day....ie, 16-28 3 pointers?

What if the 6ers are down by 8 with 20 secs left and they foul to take it to plus 10?

    Its a gamble mate.......

Is there a term for someone who bets on everything 24/7, cries like a bitch 46 times a day, blames his losses and misery on shady actions by players and or bad luck, occasionally wishes death upon players who cost him bets, turns up in other threads to tell other posters that there was nothing shady about THEIR lost bet, starts incoherent non-sensical posts about god knows what ( ie this - https://www.covers.com/postingforum/post01/showmessage.aspx?spt=71&sub=100953489 ) , masquerades as a high powered, well connected business manager in "real life" (despite seemingly never leaving this site), stops betting but continues to lurk here at covers and start pointless, depressing threads like this one ??

I don't know the answer because I didn't study criminal psychology at university, but I'm sure there's very dark, very alarming behavioural category that you this Rostos character fits into.

One of the most disturbing parts of the above spewing of words is the fact that Rostos is describing himself perfectly in the parts in bold

It must be a trait for people who're filled with self-loathing like Rostos to seek escapism by pinning their toxic image of themselves on an outside source in places like internet forums

Rostos, the key is isolating spots where traditionally you are highly likely to get a good effort from a team. No one can "know" for sure, but you can make educated guesses, and that's what this is all about. There's still an element of variability that must be accounted for.

    Its all randomness......

Unless you are that Walters bloke who has inside info and people on the take, then u r no hope....

U will get on good win streaks, bad streaks, but at the end of the day, in the long term u WILL LOSE. OTHERWISE VEGAS IS NOT in business.......

Buy your parents a gift, take them and your GF out to dinner...help a charity out....pay your rent or mortgage off.....this is NO DIFFERENT TO BLACKJACK

Thanks for the advice, but someone on a gambling site with almost 10,000 posts isn't someone I want advice from...put your tail between your legs and except your loss...somehow I won $759 last week, $930 the week before and $1155 the week before that. Kapono said it right. Find situations that make you comfortable making a play...I won $300 on the Spurs/Nuggets game last week because I believed the situation set up perfectly for San Antonio...Spurs covered gm, 3rd q and 2nd hf...pretty good situation I found myself in....Go to a meeting for crying out loud
