Because of genetics. The league is much more physical and players have better genetics and its harder to stand out in the crowd, and people can improve technically coz they have much more to work with.
If we look at running as an example, Carl Lewis was fast as fuck back in the 90s, and if we didnt have something to meassure the "fastest" 100m sprinter of all time, EVERYONE would argue about who was better or faster of Carl Lewis and Usain Bolt now. EVERYONE. But we dont, because we have a FACT stating that Usian Bolt is faster than Carl Lewis, we do not have a fact anywhere stating that LeBron is better than Michael Jordan or vice versa, its arguments/oppinions against arguments oppinions.
But, if Usian bolt where to run back then with Carl Lewis and the rest of these fellas, then he would look fast as hell because he is compared to those he is compared to. But in the world we live in today, many people would be able to run around with Carl Lewis, but it does not look like that because they are so even coz they are all so good. Its all a matter of who you are compared to. When i play basketball with my friends and i put a 40 point game on the board then i look good, but when i play with the real boys then i look like fucking shit. And that is the same with Jordan. Jordan looked good cause he didnt face any physical players. Jordan is gifted and would be amazing in this league we have today, but he would only be one of many players, back then jordan was WAY ahead of his league, he was WAY better than the rest of those guys, but in a league as tough as todays? No fucking hell he would stand out the crowd like he did back then. Everyone talking about malone, isiah, ewing, bird magic hakeem as if they were good players, hell yeah they are, but try and place them in the league today. They wouldnt be noted as something special, i can guarantee u, if isiah, malone bird magic etc played in the league today, then we wouldnt talk about them only, we would still be talking about melo, durant, love and all these guys as highly skilled players and at an even level as these guys, they only look good because they stand out of the league in which they played in. In 10 years we will probably look back and say "LeBron played with tough fellas like Melo, Love, Durant, Kobe, Paul, Howard, Harden etc" and then say that it is a harder league than back then.
Fact is, Jordan wouldnt look anywhere as good in the league today as he did back then, because players have become better and the league has gotten way better. Hell, i would stretch it as far as stating that Igoudala would probably be the best center had he played in the league back then.
If you can run the 100M in 10.00 then you are the fastest runner in 1950, if you can run 100M in 10.00 then you are NOWHERE near the fastest runner in 2012. And thats the same for Michael Jordan. He only looked good coz u compare him to the league u compare him to.
If you are a very good basketball player today, then you are just one of many. Not like Jordan who was the only good player and the only good in his time, and he looks so much better coz he is surrounded by those people.
Heck yeah, Jordan would be a top 10 heck even a top 5 player if he played in the league today, without a doubt, but he is #1 in the league back then, and so would LeBron be, and so would Kobe be, and so would Durant be. All of these guys would be #1 in the league back then, hands down.

As an example, lets say that we didnt have LeBron, we didnt have Durant, we did not have Kobe, we did not have Melo, we did not have all these guys, then there would eventually be a point where J. McGee would be the best basketball player in the league and everyone would be like "Omg, this player is SOOOOOOO good, like he is really amazing, he can move the ball so well compared to the rest of the players" But fact is, he only looks good because he is compared to friggin garbage and is maybe facing terrible defensive players, not because he is truly special and skillful.

Rodman has always been thought of as a level-headed, accurate, well-thought out individual, so when it comes to basketball history, we should all heed his words....................
.............or just remember he's an attention seeking idiot, your choice

A total romp.
And Lebron would get Lamibeer'ed everytime he tried running hoop to hoop for a basket. After ending up in the third row a couple of times, he wouldn't be doing that anymore and then he start wondering how in the world would he be able to score? THEY ACTUALLY PLAY DEFENSE IN THIS ERA!

As proof you have no c,he to what you are talking about and henceforth void any points you try to make.
1) It's not genetics, it's modern training regiments and technology. The human race hasn't evolved by heaps in the last 20 years. Your position is ludicrous.
2) Jordan didn't face any physical players? ........ You have to be sh!ttin' me mate. Clearly you are a very young person. You have no depth in this conversation. The Jordan era was the most physically era in NBA history and the very point we make why Lebron would have a hard time then. He'd get laid out everytime he would try his garbage drives or runs to the hoop and expect everyone to get out of his way. And then when he gets a tap, scrounge up his face and whine and moan like a baby that he was fouled. HE HAS NO CLUE WHAT A FOUL ON HIM WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE IN THE JORDAN ERA.
3) NO. NO WE WILL NOT look back at the league today years down the road and think this was a tough league. Laughing my arse off at the players you listed in your hypothetical flashback. Harden, Love, Kobe, etc. Yeah, real tough players. Hahaha. Again, you are showing your age. You have absolutely no depth here. The NBA in the '80's and very early '90's was like Hulk Hogan compared to today's Leaping Lenny Poffo.

What's also much better today is.................steroids................easier to hide and better quality.
Before making any assupmtion about Jamacan runners being genetically better you might want to know Jamaca has a very weak drug testing program and was long suspected of covering up drug use.
Untill just recently they were forced to get serious.
Facts are, 8 Jamacian track runners in 12 months tested positive for banned drugs.
Just this month Campell-Brown the 3 time olympic gold medalist tested positive for a banned substance.
Bolts training parnter and the silver medalist at the London games test positive for a banned substance.
That's like saying, Sammy Sousa, Maquire and Bonds broke the home run record because they were genetically superior, yea right.

Just because there are better athletes today doesn't mean there are better basketball players. The game of basketball is not strictly based on athleticism, it requires skill and coordination.
Basketball players in the 80's and 90's were much better ball players than they are today.
Prime example in today's game. Do you think Tim Duncan at 37 years old is a better athlete than Chris Bosh in his prime? Not a chance but he is a much better basketball player with more skills, which is why at nearly 40 years old he destroyed Bosh all series.
Tim Duncan was never the most athletic center or a high flyer, but has rare skills that made him the best power forward of all time. It't not strictly about athleticism. Get a clue

Having witnessed both, I thought the NBA was weak from 88 on. No one ever seems to bring up expansion. Miami, Orando, Charlotte, Minnesota and later Toronto and Vancouver. That diluted the league just a bit.
Secondly, the youth movement and training at the AAU level has improved. Similar to what happened with Germany in the latter part of the 20th Century. They really started to focus on the youth level and build better athletes. Players that played in the 80's and 90s, evolved their games at the streetball level and in high school/college. Today, kids have a structure built by the culture of AAU. I believe its softened our kids, but also helps those out that would get into trouble if they did not have that positive in their lives.
Behind the scenes, all of our major sports leagues have realized America loves offense, so rules have changed in nearly very sport to create more offense. Making it more friendly to the offensive player and taking away things the defense can do.
Things naturally evolve in sports. I don't really have an opinion on which is better. I would lean to the 90's as I enjoyed so many of those moments, but think that that with the advances in medicine and the training at the youth level, that perhaps the best era is yet to come.

Guys were real basketball players in the 80's and early 90's..... then the 'athletes' came in, who could run fast and jump out of the gym...The Darius Miles' of the world......
LeBron, Melo, Wade..... they would take one shove from the Bad Boys team or from someone like Charles Oakley and they would turn into perimeter shooters real quick. Just because they can run fast and dunk don't mean shiiiit.

Yeah because Orlando, Charlotte, Minnesota, and Toronto are just great teams these days. Aren't they still diluting the league just a bit?

This would be like an NFL team (the 90's players) playing a college football team if these guys played today.
Nate Robinson has carved out a career in the NBA. The players in the 90's (even the Mitch Richmonds, Kevin Johnsons, Gary Paytons, etc., etc., etc.) would have ZERO problem playing today).
If ignorance is bliss, you must perpetually be on cloud 9.

I've been around long enough to watch, in person, players from the 1960s through today and can assure you, without any hesitation or question, that this is perhaps the least talented era in professional basketball as there has ever been. If you want to believe differently, that's your choice, but the true NBA fans knows differently.
