Sixers v Celtics
The big story coming into this series is these teams split their regular season series and Joel Embiid is out , at least for now due to appendectomy and no return date has been set yet.
When the Celtics are best , they never let their foot off the gas and blow teams away. But look back to just one year ago and the Celtics were defeated by the New York Knicks in the conference semi-finals... and 2 of those games the Celtics held 20-point 2nd half leads and blew both of them. That is something to watch today and in this series. The Sixers have Paul George and Tyrese Maxey at the forefront , with Oubre a key contributor offensively but Philly will have to make the game " ugly" in order to have any chance at keeping up with Boston today. The Sixers had success without Embiid when both Paul George & Maxey were playing this season, but they beat up on bad teams. Jayson Tatum is healthy , and the Celtics are on a bit of a revenge tour after getting bounced early last year. Let's not forget about VJ Edgecombe being high in rookie of the year discussion for Philly and if he can produce offensively with any consistency , this team could be very dangerous.
I think there are a lot of guys on this Sixer squad that either have a lot of experience or the ability to single-handedly take over a game and this team is dangerous. Between Andre Drummond at center, rookie Vj Edgecombe scoring 16 ppg, Quentin Grimes was 38% from 3 pt range in regular season against Boston, and Paul George's veteran presence & ability to still take over a game... I wouldn't be counting Philly out of this series. I think we will find out quickly that despite missing Joel Embiid, this team is for real and should not be counted out. All that being said... There are a lot of new pieces here playing for Philly.. this is not a team that has played together in the postseason before. I think theyll " ugly" the game, but offensive it'll take time for this team to really gel and in game 1, Boston gets it done.
Side Note: The last time , these two teams played , the spread was 9.5 with an over-under of 220.5, resulting in a Celtic blowout and low scoring game but both Paul George and Jayson Tatum were out and are now back today... and yet the total sits at 216.5... four points lower. I think that # is set low for a reason and we see a very ugly game this afternoon, and the scenario I referred to above plays out, as this game goes very, very low scoring
