Let me address your question, marinosman. As I'm sure you already know, in any online forum on the net, you're going to find a somewhat vicious environment. It's just the nature of the beast. In a freeform open forum like this there will always be a certain number of troublemakers, dissemblers and rabble rousers. As well, there are probably even some parties causing disruption who don't like seeing us "little guys" hone our skills. Throw in a few cretins, retards, juveniles, and other miscreants and there you have it.
As you say, this kind of forum will draw VERY opinionated people. Only very opinionated people would even attempt this sort of endeavor. I do empathize and agree with the subtance of your question though: "Why do people have to be so mean?" Very valid question. Very. Life is tough enough without having to cause others grief, right? You need to discern where these kind of people are coming from, I think. Many are just sick, twisted, frustrated people with nothing better to do than to cause other people consternation. That's the way they get their jollies. Go figure? I don't get it either. They will reap their due reward eventually though. Never misunderstand that.
We don't have to let these kind of people disrupt what we are doing here though. There's some good and decent people in here, trying to not only help themselves but also sharing their knowledge and expertise and time and insight so as to help others. That's got a small flavor of nobility to it in my book. That's why I joined this community (besides being a piss-poor handicapper (ha!)). => little guys banding together helping each other against the big boys. As I've said before, I like the sound of that tune.
What we need to do is this:
First, think about your post before haphazardly posting something that might be misconstrued. Constructive criticism is fine. We all need good critique. The wise man will listen to critique and make of it what might be appropriate. The fool unilaterally discards all critique though; bent upon destruction. Critique, if delivered in the right spirit is not a bad thing. However, let's be careful about name calling and nagging. Some people are overly sensitive and they take offense very very easily. Don't be part of generating problems unneccesarily.
Second, let's mostly just ignore vicious people. Let their postings be like a smelly wind passing through; that clears with the cool fresh breeze that the good people bring in. Mostly, don't even respond to these retards. It's probably appropriate once in awhile for somebody to blast 'em back (some of you good guys have a really good knack for that). Probably good to let 'em know, we're not complete idiots around here once in awhile. But my personal take? Mostly, I'm just going to try and ignore insults and affronts. Those kind of people are just trying to get a rise. Why give them the satisfaction? Keep to the high ground. Don't stoop to their level and allow them to bring additional disruption.
Third: As you intimated marinosman, let's NOTE VERY WELL those that only seek aggression and disruption. Let's identify and note them very well. Let them be branded by the very tenor of their posts. I know people can change their post I.D.'s, but still in all, it is usually apparent who is trying to be a troublemaker and who isn't.
Just my thoughts on the subject, marinosman. Sorry to be so long winded... I love this forum and I appreciate those who contribute in a helpful spirit of community. Kudos to the many great ones here that make this forum the great learning venue that it is.
PS: I am going to also post this as its own thread. Perhaps others have additional thoughts.
