But when it happens in DC between two black basketball stars (well, one star that is), it's front page news on a gossip rag I wouldn't even wipe my ass with...

And the gambling debt is PURE speculation. These players love to play poker in their downtime and the NBA is ultra-sensitive to the word gambling after the TD scandal even though 1/2 the people that give them ratings are doing so because they have bets on the games.

Scalabrine, believe it or not, I think you bring up some good points.

I think many of these people including myself find your remarks so inflammatory is because we do expect people in the civilized culture to behave different. Maybe I understand  Arenas and his actions, maybe I do not but lets take this scenario a step further. Lets say one of these two loses his cool a little more and puts a cap in the other. Then lets say the other guy now wounded shoots back and misses, fatally wounding the equipment manager and paralyzing the team trainer......Now what?

So to me in a civilized culture and with any ethical or moral grounds we cannot be pulling guns, whether we came from the Ghetto or the Burbs. Whether we are white, black, green or orange. There is no upbringing or racial coloring that makes this ok or acceptable. That is  why we have laws. That is why we uphold laws.  It is not about what brought us to this situation, it is how we behave in this situation.   It is not about our skin color or social economic background it is about being human as you said yourself. TO ME THIS IS NOT THE BEHAVIOR OF A HUMAN.

In Arenas mind and I think in yours, this may be   justified because of all the injustices (true there are many) that have been imposed on the various races.  Although the injustices are true and the inequalities still remain today, we must have laws . We must live at a higher level of civilization and togetherness.

Now, I already know you are going to say I am a lily white guy living in the Suburbs and have no idea what goes on in the city and have never been there and never want to go there and I have no ability to speak on such things and I am a clueless fuck. These things I am afraid  are all true But  I will leave you with this,  no one is changing this problem by perpetuating it with the same kinds of choices and actions.   To say we cannot understand it is one thing, to accept it is totally different. If we do not strive for better behavior regardless of out skin color we will never have it. If you view this as good behavior then we cannot discuss this further.

I am a clueless fuck who believes we should all get along better and not be pulling guns on one another regardless of our skin color or socioeconomic background.

if you don't want people pulling guns, then start telling the owners of walmart and gun shops who are primarily white to:
A)Stop selling guns or 
B)Invest in technology which disallows illegal gun ownership (i.e. dna or fingerprint activated guns which will not discharge unless held by the owner...believe it or not THIS ALREADY EXISTS but is 'too expensive' to manufacture on a large scale)

You see, whites have home ownership, good schools, employment and prosperity far beyond what minorities have. They own guns to protect themselves and hunt (at least this is what they have convinced themselves of). They needn't pull a gun on another human because again, THEY HAVE TO MUCH TO LOSE.

Glibert, one of the few minorities who also does much of this, remains in a frame of mind in which he must protect himself AND HIS HONOR, at all costs. That may seem stupid to some but there was a time a soldier fell on his sword because he dishonored himself. And men fought to the death because another household was disrespected. That carries on in the black culture. Whites have moved on from it because of moral relativism, a coddling religious community, and immense prosperity. Believe it or not, some men will still die for their family name. I'll tell you this. That argument in that locker room went well beyond gambling. I suspect JC said something very personal to Glibert for him to brandish a firearm (maybe that Shaq was fucking his wife). It is VERY human to act upon impulse. Not moral, but human...

That being said, you have a good head on your shoulders and are headed in the right direction, with much more to learn, with regard to race relations in america (and i was cheering for the Bearcats too, but their white ass coach decided to the jump the nearest train, abandon the university that made him, and coach the prominent Irish Catholic White college while his school wallowed in a quagmire of consternation in the biggest game in school history).

Scal, it boggles my mind that someone obviously as intelligent as you are absolutely refuses to address the issue in personal responsibility here. So if people pull guns on one another, it's the fault of the "white owners" to stop selling guns or develop some technology to help people NOT pull guns on one another? How about this -- don't pull guns on one another if you are unwilling to suffer the consequences!

No one made either of these guys draw on each other -- they decided to do it... and if you are gonna be a big boy who walks around threatening people with firearms, then guess what -- you are also a big enough boy to deal with the consequences of your actions.

Scal, the only people who are at fault in this incident are Gilbert and Javaris, period. They drew on one another, not as black men, not as basketball players, but as men. And as men, they will have to answer for their actions under the laws of the jurisdiction in which this occurred.
