I did the same thing last year. I played the POY in GAME 1 with the Thunder -5.5 over the Sixers. It was a game that was posted THREE MONTHS in advance and I begged the readers to get it while they could. It won. Yes, it won. 

This year, the POY comes in Game 1 again.

There is a lot to say about this play in terms of metrics but the angles beyond that is the trigger for the play itself, and why I am going so large. So let's concentrate on that alone.

The focus here is on the CAVS because we all know the assets the Celtics acquired. So let me address the Cavs: the impetus for the play and the state they are in.

The 3 angles are this: 1. "Fade the Ego Massaging" + 2. "Offseason of Turmoil" + 3. "Playoff/Kyrie Revenge"

#1 Fade the Ego Massaging

I was on the fence about this game since the schedule was announced. 

Then I saw who Lue decided would be in his starting lineup. And it is jaw-dropping:

Lebron (naturally)
Crowder (New face)
Love (at center? Huh?)
Wade (WHAT?)
Rose (An even BIGGER WHAT!??)

How in the WORLD is Lue STARTING Wade and Rose??? I guess you have an argument with Wade but is he, at 35, a better fit than JR who has been a cornerstone of the team? Hell no.

And worse, to start Rose?? The Knicks did everything possible to get rid of this guy. The lowly despicable Knicks! They wanted no part of him and he basically went AWOL and forced himself off the team. Now he's the STARTING PG for the 3 time defending EC Champs?

If you're answer is YES I know what your next words will be. Who else is there? Kyrie was traded and Thomas is injured. The CROWN JEWEL who was supposed to start has a timetable to get back on the court....when exactly????

So ROSE is the #1 option???

And his back-up is? Drumroll please? Jose Calderon???!!! 

Seriously! Seriously? I know there is an echo in the thread right now but is because I am so dumbfounded the Cavs would field this as their opening day roster!

Calderon is yet ANOTHER ex-knick who they couldn't wait to get rid of...just like Rose.

Now I know they have even MORE KNICKS on their squad in JR and Iman, but those two, as big of dumpster fires as they were in NY, were godsends to the Cave Championship team.

Lightening has already struck twice. Now you think it will strike a third and fourth time with Knicks castaways??? Twice is the max folks. You do NOT want to keep accruing Ex-Knicks on your team! This is a disaster of a position. Rose can score but he has NO lateral movement because of his innumerable surgeries. He cannot defend anyone. Kyrie will tear him limb from limb after the nerves are calmed being back in Cleveland.

Now onto Love at Center. This is a player who has started 62% of his career at PF and virtually 100% at PF in his time with CLE. And now, opening night against what could be the future #1 seed, you...start him at center and bench a natural center in Tristan Thompson....Wow. There will be an adjustment and I can't think Love is happy about this!

Now onto Wade. 35 years old. Career lows in points, assists, minutes played per game, FG % last year on the Bulls and now he dispatches JR because well, he won twice with Lebron in Miami so why not start him?

And worse, don't look now but you just pissed off the WORST guy to piss off in the league (because he is a complete head case, the modern day Dennis Rodman) for his benching:

I watched NY burn as this guy wouldn't even lace up his shoelaces. Piss him off and he can go into a cocoon or start chucking like Jamal Crawford of Knicks yesteryear.

And why was this all done? Why all these moves. To APPEASE the egos of AGING Stars. And this is a winning formula?

Oh and Lebron has an ankle injury which took him out of several preseason games. 

When asked about it, Lue diverted with "Just something we're going to do to start the season and see how it works."

That sounds very confident doesn't it?

We haven't even gotten to angle #2.

#2 Offseason of turmoil 

The Cavs were in the news EVERY DAY for a stretch, so much so, GM's were passing on taking up the role because the Cavs were regarded as a sinking ship, so much so that Lebron was tweeting to Magic Johnson as rumors swirled he could join the Lakers in free agency.

Then you have the debacle that was the Kyrie/Lebron breakup, filling this team with more drama than an episode of DALLAS with JR Ewing (the REAL JR!).

Who shot JR btw? 

This team was a rudderless SHIP in the offseason and now you bring in Rose and Wade and trade Kyrie and all is right with the world? No way. This team is primed to lose...

Just today, to clear up a roster spot, the Cavs got rid of one of the most solid vets and locker room presences the team had: Richard Jefferson. Why? So he could be cut by the Hawks. Nice move.

I've never used so many question marks in a write-up in my life!

#3 Playoff/Kyrie revenge

I know most of you will put your money on Lebron for revenge in the Kyrie/Lebron showdown. But he doesn't have the pieces. The pieces he does have simply will slow him down. And he may be injured. At least a bit. 

Moreover, Kyrie has said time and time again he wanted to be the leader of a team. Now is the perfect opportunity to prove it in game 1. This is that game. Start your proclamations off right with a win.

Now there is a SMALL droplet of playoff revenge here given NOT EVERYONE on the Celtics was traded this offseason (even though it seems like they were). 

Give me Horford, Rozier, and Smart and Brown to be motivated with that revenge (not like they'd need it given the glare of the bright lights on this game will be like chicken roster lights at Boston Chicken).

And then there is Gordon Hayward. Need I throw him rose petals to tell you what he can do?

The Cavs bench is loaded with even more dinosaurs like Korver and Frye and Jeff Green in comparison.

I always remember how simple BegginerBoy put it when he said the Thunder would eliminate the Spurs from the playoffs two years ago: They are OLD.

Very simple. Very direct. Straight to the point. This team is ancient and Lue is STARTING them to massage their egos. Bad judgment.

On opening night against the number 1 team in the East. Terrible decision making!

Another little footnote. The Cavs most definitely can flame out on opening night at home. In a game Lebron called "one of hte biggest of his career" against the Knicks in the first game after he returned to Cleveland, the Knicks won outright by 8 aas 12 point DOGS. Not the same team but Lebron started and finished an he is and always will be ...the Cavs. 

And yet another footnote: The Cavs looked AWFUL in the preseason going 1-4.

And worse, the preseason this year was shortened by the most time every allowing for only 5 games. The Cavs could have used 4 or 5 more games like a regular preseaosn. Oh, and the Celtics were perfect. I know it's only preseason but when you have THIS much turnover, you need time. The Cavs didn't get it and it showed.

YES, I know what you can retort: Celtics NEED time to GEL. And yes, that is a legitimate retort. And that is the ONLY counter-argument of worth IMO opinion if you are afraid of taking the Celtics. 

Because read and re-read the above. This Cavs team thinks its all coming together after all they've been through....VIOLA. Hell no! Not on my cap or my gambling dollar!

And after all this, I get.....3. OK! Yes GIVE ME POINTS VEGAS! After all the above, after the crown jewel of a mega-trade is MIA , leaving you with Rose and Calderon at PG (a reason to play the Celtics on its own ALONE!), GIVE ME POINTS! Make Cavs bettors pay a premium for a team so old, they may have been mentioned in Genesis.

CLEVELAND UNDER 53.5 wins: +135 

BESIDES all the meat and potatoes above, you know the James injury or extended period where he is out is coming. Or at a minum more rest is coming, likely at his request.  He is playing less than 82 games every year and as he ages, he will need to sit. Just like Tim and Tony and Manu did as Pop preserved them for what seems like forever. Since 2014 the Cavs are 4-23 SU without Lebron. He sits? They lose 85% of the time.....That's after all the above.

Solid points man,but there is to admit that chemistry in boston in still a huge question mark.Wouldn't go so high on their first game.
Having said that,i think i will tail with a medium bet.thanks for the write up man!

I agree with you on this one Scal Cavs will take a while to jell.  Love at Center makes no sense at all lol.  Didn't the Cavs lose to the Knicks last year in the first game as -16 point favorites?  I am going to wait till a little closer to game time to maybe get +4 and I will take Celtics money line as well.

I would rather JR Smith start as well, but there's a good chance Wade and Smith end up playing the same amount of minutes anyways.

Celtics lost the core of their team.You will lose, Cavs are winning. If your so right about than why are you not working in the NBA. I know because your whole breakdown is crap. King plays Cavs school about to be in session.

Well folks, need I say more? Replacing Kyrie with a busted up, broken down, Derrick Rose and he asks me if I "watched the preseason games." I did, and the Cavs looked like total shi* if YOU want to make a point about that.

Really? Their core was Thomas and they traded him for Kyrie and he isn't playing until ....January. 

So who exactly lost what when it comes to this trade????? Because the Cavs have Thomas....riding the bench.

Lol this is too funny, what games were you watching? You realize the first two games cavs were up double digits at half and sat out their rotation players? But man betting against Lebron opening night , a game he knows damn well he can't lose probably isn't a good idea.. Baynes hurt Morris out.... and lets not kid ourselves we all know Lebron's ankle is not gonna make a difference come on now. Anyways I'm here looking for the best play but this post is just too biased. 

How about Brown guarding Lebron? Loool wait look at the bench Morris hurt? Who else gets to guard Lebron? How about Baynes and Morris out , who is the back up big man? So if Horford gets in foul trouble this game is done? And relax with the celtics bench being better lol yall so biased. And you heard it here first Wade when it comes to big games always shows up

lets not forget some of the embarrassing historically bad losses the Cavs handed Stevens and the Celtics in last years playoffs .. Infact they beat the Celtics in Boston so bad in 1 game it was the worst playoff loss in Celtics history .. im sure Stevens and the Celtics remember these things

Lol two completely different teams , I don't think anyone says "remember how they beat us last year" lool both team have enough motivation to win this game I mean its opening night who wants to lose that....

@prodigy - Brown guarding Lebron?? You don't even have confirmation he'll even play the game and you are giving hand waves to that and the preseason losses which you first put stock For Rose's play and are now trying to dismiss because they ultimately lost them.

Scal I imagine that the public will tutn their attention to this game only after today's NFL

They will surely see the Cavs at home favoured by only a FG and will bet the Cavs with or without LBJ

Wait for 24 hours maybe?
