 WEEI.com's Rob Bradford says the new deal will guarantee Wakefield $5MM ($3.5MM in 2010, $1.5MM in 2011), with incentives that could push the total value of the deal up to $7MM.

 

According to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox will not pick up Jason Varitek's $5MM option for 2010. Varitek now has five days to decide on the $3MM player option portion of the contract. He could also earn another $2MM in incentives based on games started next season.

 

 

 

Worth the risk for Wakefield. We saw what he can do when he's healthy. He was pretty good this season. And declining VTeks option is smart too. He's only getting worse and the Captain just should pack it in.

Oh yea...

 

No surprise here, though now it's official: The Red Sox have exercised their $7.1MM option for Victor Martinez according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. This was about as much of a no-brainer as they come.

Poor Varitek, even if he comes back he is not going to play.  He should call it quits... and land himself a coaching job... instead of going out on a worse note than he is already at

PennStateMan...Yea...I use mlbtraderumors. I find that to be the best site out there. Much beter than rotoworld. mlbtraderumors is all that...rumors and conformations. I like rumors because it gives me an idea of who MAY go where. rotoworld gives more of sure things while the other site is more in depth in these kind of things. rotoworld is better to find injury updates, and trades though.

Damon & Matsui Pettitte are free agents, Yankees need them all back but I think only Pettitte will come back .

Some team is going to offer Jason Varitek more than 5 Million

"Rumor has it" that the Yanks are looking to sign Matsui, Damon AND Pettitte to one year deals. Or at least offer them those deals. I can see Matsui and Pettitte to accept them but Damon, with Boras, is a different story. For some DUMB reason Boras thinks Damon should sign a long term deal for good money. Shocker. And they also said the Yanks would grab Lackey if he would sign a similar contract as Burnett.

BTW...Varitek accepted a 3 Million 1yr option & will be the highest paid backup catcher in baseball.
