The Chicago Cubs have seen all that they have wanted from the San Diego Padres' celebrated bullpen.
Thursday afternoon, however, the Cubs will see a familiar face in Yu Darvish as they play the Padres in a decisive winner-take-all Game 3 of their National League wild-card series in Chicago.
Darvish (5-5, 5.38 ERA) will get the start against his former team when he squares off against fellow right-hander Jameson Taillon (11-7, 3.68).
Darvish, who pitched for the Cubs from 2018-20, is 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA in six career appearances (all starts) versus the representatives from the North Side.
A favorite of the Wrigley Field faithful isn't having a banner start to this series, however.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is 0-for-6 with five strikeouts after going 5-for-14 with two homers and four RBIs in his last four games of the regular season.
Taillon improved to 4-1 in his last six outings on Saturday after yielding one run on three hits in six innings of a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. He has permitted six runs on 24 hits in 34 1/3 innings during that stretch.
Taillon is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in five career appearances (all starts) against San Diego. He received a no-decision in his last encounter despite allowing two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings on April 14.

Schlittler, who played at Northeastern University, which is a half-mile from Fenway Park, earned the start after a stellar two-plus months in the rotation. He finished 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts after making his debut July 9.
"He gave us a shot in the arm when he became another stabilizing force in our rotation," Boone said Tuesday afternoon. "He will handle it well regardless of result or whatever, like I don't think it will be too big for him, and he will be ready to roll."
The 24-year-old struck out nine and pitched seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday in his latest start.
Schlittler did not face the Red Sox in the regular season but said he faced Boston in an exhibition game when he was at Northeastern.
"Obviously I am a lot different player than I was then," Schlittler said. "So didn't really expect to be in this situation back then, but now I am definitely happy I am."
Early was Boston's fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, and he went 1-2 with 2.33 ERA in four starts to open his major league career this year. He is filling in on Thursday for Lucas Giolito, who likely will miss the postseason due to elbow pain.
Early has yet to face the Yankees. He last pitched on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers, when he allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, throwing 86 pitches.
"It comes down to this game, and I'm excited to get out there," Early said. "I've stuck to all my preparation and feel pretty good, so I'm ready to go out there and do it."

Cecconi (7-7, 4.30 ERA) takes on Tigers righty Jack Flaherty (8-15, 4.64 ERA) in a matchup that was set up by the Guardians' 6-1 home victory Wednesday.
Cecconi tossed two scoreless innings in two appearances as a rookie with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies in his only career playoff appearances. He is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two career starts against Detroit.
Flaherty lost his final two starts during Detroit's final-month collapse, both against the Guardians, allowing a combined four runs in 9 1/3 innings on Sept. 17 and 24. He is 2-5 with a 2.51 ERA in 10 career games against the Indians/Guardians, including a 0-3 record and 3.94 ERA in three outings in 2025.
The 29-year-old hurler was traded by the Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2024 trade deadline, won a World Series championship there, and returned to Detroit as a free agent.
"It was weird last year because I didn't really want to go," Flaherty said. "Obviously, things worked out in a great way for both sides. I was lucky enough to come back and continue those relationships."
The winner of Game 3 will play the Seattle Mariners in the AL Divisional Series.
"We've just got to show up tomorrow and win a baseball game," Detroit outfielder Riley Greene said. "We'll be ready."
