First off, the line on this game kind of says it all. Why aren't the 5-1 Brewers with the lead leading +28 run differential not heavy favorites, vs a guy just called up from AAA?
A Brewers team that has been smashing RHP...
My take, if it matters at all, is this.
Avila is an outstanding prospect for the Royals. The kid is young with a high ceiling. He looked great in his limited time last year with the Royals. He looked great pitching for Venezuela in the world baseball classic imo. He continued his success in spring training. The Royals wanted to keep him stretched out in AAA to begin, and not to rush him into the bigs. They're playing the long game. This dude will be a starter for them soon enough.
Michael Wacha was scheduled to start, but got sick. So Avila gets a spot start here. I will admit, I'm not a fan of disrupted routine for pitchers, and surely Avila's is.
Lastly, not to get too long winded. Avila has a high arm angle/release point. The dude is a ground ball producing machine. Something different for batters who've never seen him before.
Chad Patrick isn't anything special, nor is he horrible.
Avoiding the Royals bullpen like blood, and will need 5 innings from Avila, hopefully.
Good Luck

Ballsy, I like it. That line does seem a bit ridiculous. Like you mentioned, it must be this Avila guys stock had potential to soar. GL, enjoy the weekend.
