Freeland needed 21 pitches just to survive the first, and only 11 were strikes. He walked the leadoff man, allowed traffic, gave up the three-run bomb, then had to work around more pressure. That is exactly the stressful opening we wanted.

The only disappointment is Washington leaving that extra run at third. They had a chance to make it 4-0 or 5-0 and let him escape at 3-0.

Still, we have the lead, Freeland’s pitch count is elevated, and his command does not look sharp. Now Alvarez just needs a clean first inning
