I'm no pro, but I do count on poker as extra weekly income. There are plenty of pros out here, that do nothing but play poker for a living. I've met a few that claim to be. Search the net for a while, you can find them in messageboards and blogs as well.
Honestly, I believe with the advent of the recent poker craze, one could/can do it professionally here. I won't say it would be easy, but I believe it can be done. Most people that say they are pros, really aren't, as in, they have other sources of income.
There are a lot of games around town, 24/7. And most are donkish tourists, believe me. The easiest games are the tourist filled 1/2 NL tables, which are everywhere. This is where I make my money. But, of course, it's not enough for a living. I've thought about it, and think 1/2 NL games just aren't enough, with the limited buy-ins and smaller pots. If you could grind out a couple of hundred dollars a day, I think you'd be doing good, but that's not enough for decent living in Las Vegas. And of course, there are going to be days where you're going to lose a lot more than 200.
But if you have the bankroll and game, one can easily play bigger games, such as 5/10 NL and up. But of course, but not necessarily, the competion gets better. If you're a tournament player, there can be opportunities there as well. But your steady income will come from the cash games at first, imho. Of course, besides all of that, you have to a bankroll and a personal dispostion to be able to handle the variance that will occur, sometimes months at a time.

Personally, I don't think I have the dispostion to handle the variance. To me, nothing is worse than grinding out a few hundred dollars over a 4 or 5 hr session, then losing it all in a few minutes.
I have a very hard time with that. It just feels like I wasted 5 hrs of my life for nothing. If I don't walk away with a profit, I feel like I've wasted my time and could be doing something productive - like handicapping sports!
Seriously though, I can take a large loss on a sports bet and feel better about that, than taking a large hit after several hours of poker play.

I read the story about that guy.Freakin crazy,he had no experience,no car.He played stud for really low limits,I don't see how he coulda survived for the first 2 -3 years.He failed to state his bankroll when he got to vegas,woulda helped to know.He didn't even learn texas holdem till a couple a years later.Also he wasn't palying any tourneys.Your gonna have a monthly nut of at least $1300-1500 for just living stuff.If he was making that off of low limit stud god bless him,but I find it a little hard to believe.He did do it for a while till he got lazy and took off like 4 months one year.That hurt your roll.He did it,it can be done,so why not if the situation is right.Whats the worst thing that can happen?Just lose some money.I enjoy being my own boss,doing it right now,just hate getting up early!I'm a late sleeper and a night owl so my poker life will mesh with that!!lol
