Looking for stock advice for school project....

Hey guys- I'm a regular poster here on the sports boards, but I'm wondering if any of you have some advice for a school project I'm starting right now for my Investments class.  Each student has $500,000 of fake money to invest in whichever stocks they choose.  The project starts on September 24th and runs for about 3 months.  I need to work my account to over $600,000 to get an A.  I'm starting to research online and in the WSJ, but any advice at what stocks/bonds that I should be looking to buy would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks guys

Can you go long or short, mutual funds, options, what are the rules?

wow... that's an interesting project.  I would ride a couple of people on this board and check it daily for any new tips.  Also check places like The Fly or Sierra for more ideas. 
 
but don't just do something because others are doing it.  Feel free to ask a question here, because the important part is that you learn why they are doing it.  I'll probably be very interested in the questions you ask as well, because i'm no genius at this stuff.

Wallstreet- I have the actual rule packet back at my place, and I'll post the specifics when I get home later.  I know that we have to at least sell one stock short, and mutual funds and options are fair game as well.

short a home builder and buy a basket of large cap tech (csco, orcl, etc) things that are not consumer related

by the way if you can make 20% in 3 months i'm firing my broker and will hire you

No Joke. I bet 80% of the students don't even show a profit, unless they just plop it in a money market fund for the whole semester.

The approach will be determined by the desired outcome. Do you want to be a hero or crash and burn, in the middle of the pack?

There are many ways to go about this..with the time horizon I dont know how you can expect to make a big return unless you take a big risk.

The next three months are usually good for being long in the market, especially tech..

Let us know how aggressive you want to be.

go International Stocks via a Mutual Fund.
