?? About ETFs

Why do most seasoned investors I talk to not like ETFs
to me they look like a good tool for traders with plenty of volatility with leverage built in.

I find it interesting that someone that thinks the market is "they gotta cut that shit out, us working younger Americans can't afford to keep propping up the Boomers casino playground" (a direct quote by ricky-tickdov from a political forum thread) would give a shit

Sorry to hijack this thread but I had a question about ETFs also.  Since we are able to get in and out of ETFs as easily as we could with stocks, won't this eventually make Mutual Funds obsolete?  Why would anyone want to deal with the mgmt fees and minimum investments of a MF? 
 
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't know a whole lot about ETFs and they are gaining my interest.  I mean, if I wanted an S&P fund such as the Vanguard 500, why wouldn't I just buy SPY?  Can someone please enlighten me?

wow that must of really bothered you, i know the truth stings the most. And, btw, you misquoted ME, i don't think rick said anything on the topic. Funny how you never responded to my lasst question in the that thread

i'll go bump it in politics for you.

rick, the ETF's are purely for gamblers. kinda like the stock market. but don't tell none of these old folk that, it will ruffle their depends.  They feel the only way to 'invest' is thru the stock market .  'the market' is more rigged than an NBA game, so i steer clear of both as best i can

and as for "how's your real estate investment doing out there in Vegas...", we bought our house in 1990 for 135k and it's worth about 225k now. it's our RESIDENCE and it's PAID FOR. we never used it like an ATM like some hand-to-mouther like YOU probably did. sounds to me like you took a bath in your 401k and home value and, like most rightwingers, instead of blaming the corporate CROOKS that fucked everything up because the Republicans, with a big assist from Mr NAFTA Clinton, turned the markets into a Wall Street version of "T-E-G-W-A-R".
 
btw, 'the market' is more rigged than an NBA game, so i steer clear of both as best i can MAY just be correct BUT, if you keep your HEAD out of your ASS, you can usually figure WHICH WAY the fix is and trade accordingly. it's worked for me since the late 1970's and the march bottom in the Casino stocks was classic.

bought my house in fall '07 for 135k when comps in my area were 210k -240k
 
re-fi'd march '09 for a 30% discount on my interest rate , i'm never selling, but the banks valuation was 169.9k, and i live in the MOST RECESSION-PROOF county in the country.
 
I have no 401k to take a bath on as i'm 27 yrs old and my wages are all upfront so i can utilize them now, rather than bank on the crooks in D.C. to baby me forever , so i didn't have to take that 50% haircut.
 
My only recent big scores investment wise were some physical platinum that i loaded up on in '06 thru part of '07 and then dumped most of it before everything started crashing.
My other 'investment' is physical silver, which i treat like a 401k (buy and hold till retirement) which has treated me quite nicely so far .   Get back to me around 2025 when i'm contemplating retirement and i'll let you know how those silver 'investments' panned out .  The Phils to win the world series tickets that i bought in May of '08 and cashed after the world series last year didn't hurt either, seeing as how they were both 18 to 1 
 
When i can piss off the lefties and the righties at the same time, then i know i'm on the right track.  A better America for everyone, moving forward.
 
LeRink, good luck with all your stock market 'infestments' in the future, and good luck with your pens today and on their quest for Lord Stanleys . Why do you keep calling ME hand-to-mouther?  I meant nothing bad towards YOU when i stated the obvious that the gov't is propping up the stock market.  I've worked since i was 12 years old

Leveraged ETF's are shaky at best.  Especially when it's 3X.
