In the Alabama, I was at the SPA for the Coaching Club Oaks and got to see the #1 Royal Delta, the #3 Plum Pretty and the #4 It's Tricky.
This should be a good race despite the short 6 horse field.
#1 Royal Delta - Was bet solidly in the CC Oaks but didn't fire. Has proven she doesn't fire for Mott off the layoff. She looked good winning the Black-Eyed Susan but suffered a foot injury soon thereafter and missed training time and a scheduled start so she probably wasn't at her best in the CC Oaks where she was taken back off the first turn, was hard held down the backstretch and made a decent run on the far turn before tiring. I expect a much better effort today and a better early position. Should love the added distance.
#2 Pinch Pie - must be promised some money for making this a 6 horse field but has no shot!
#3 Plum Pretty - Set a comofrtable pace in the CC Oaks and battled It's Tricky for the final 3 furlongs. Her OK effort in the Hollywood Oaks could be attributed to her recovering from an illness and she was outstanding winning the Kentucky Oaks last May holding off the hard charging St. John's River. Will be on the lead and they will have her to catch and there's no reason why this shouldn't be comfortable again. Has been working well of late.
#4 It's Tricky - Will be the favorite and rightfully so having won 5 of 6 including back-to-back Grade 1's in the Acorn and CC Oaks. Will be stalking Plum Pretty again. Has the top Beyer in the field with a 104 in the Acorn and definitely has the best sheet numbers. She'll be a tough contender and would be very surprised if she is not 1st or 2nd.
#5 St John's River - Was flying home in May in the Kentucky Oaks making up 16 lengths to miss just a neck to Plum Pretty. She was the best horse that day after ducking out at the start losing about 3 lengths then angling in on the dead rail to the far turn and then angling in to the dead rail in the upper stretch before moving out late. Won the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks in July holding off two horses including All for Thee who was simply horrendous in yesterday's Proud Spell minor stakes at the SPA. Her best Beyer ranks 5th in this 6 horse field and her sheet numbers aren't as solid as the 1,3 and 4. A solid horse but the pace won't be to her liking to close into and she hasn't proved to be fast enough for me. A great horse who could win but I am against her.
#6 Inglorious - Was absolutely incredible winning the Queens Plate at Woodbine against all boys, the first part of the Canadian Triple Crown closing from 12th and sweeping by a 17 horse field. The soundly beaten 3rd place finisher that day came back to win the last two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown while Inglorious opted to set her aims on today's Alabama. Top Woodbine jockey, Contreras has led her to three consecutive wins and comes down to ride today. She is 5 for 5 on synthetic surfaces but is 0 for 2 on dirt despite two solid dirt efforts at the Fairgrounds where she finished 2nd in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra faced with the difficult task of overcoming a strong speed bias and slow pace and a tough set up in the Grade 2 Fair Ground Oaks. She is the only filly in the field to go today's mile and a quarter. By far the top money winner int he field but her sheet numbers are 5th best out of today's 6 horse field and her closing style could be compromised by the pace just like St. John's River. Is a sexy pick fort people but if she wins, it will come at my expense.
I'm leaning towards the Royal Delta, It's Tricky and Plum Pretty but haven't finalized how I will handle this yet.
