Give anyone the rail, especially after they said it was the way to win, you are going to get weird winners.

If you let me pick the Derby right now I still couldn't come up with Mine That Bird.  He was IMPOSSIBLE to come up with.  IMPOSSIBLE!
 
As homework I want each of you to go back to your forms.  Pick who you think are the worst eight horses pre derby.  Now put ML odds to that eight horse race.  I have Mine that Bird 50-1 in that race!

I went back and looked 3 times and still knowing the outcome would scratch that horse.

couldn't have said it better myself . . . i went back and looked, no way pick that horse to win that race of the 8 worst, i have him beating the pletcher speedball and no one else.

most said the same thing about charismatic . . . this horse was the best today by a wide margin.  we all missed it, the trainer missed it, borel knew it, sounds likes the owner had an inkling.  i will not be fast in writing this hoss for the preakness.

It has nothing to do with that. But if you gave 5 out of the last 8 horses that spot, prob 3 of them can get that hole to the rail.

hey holybull this is how my derby went. I want revenge my key horse gets scratched. Friesan fire gets stomped on coming out of the gate and gets part of his foot ripped off. Dunkirk almost falls to his face.

My plan going was to spend $100.  5...$20 win tickets. (Summer Bird, Dunkirk, Friesan Fire, Papa Clem & Mine That Bird)  He was in my original selections...had nothing to do with past running lines...beyers or company kept.  One reason behind it....Birdstone...who loved the distance n mud. I liked Summer Bird...so based on my thought going in...I couldn't play 1 without playing the other.


That being said, I then looked at the running lines and Mine That Bird got thrown out of my tickets & Pioner Of The Nile replaced him.  Always trust the first instinct!! Lesson Learned.  Couple guys I know at Emerald Downs hit the Exacta for $2...which was a decent score.  As they wheeled the 16/All & All/16

Mine that Bird should have been 99-1+ in that race, but he went off 50-1 meaning that the derby is nothing more than a crapshoot/lottery due to all the non-horse playing public betting.  Anyway, good job if u had that claimer, but you got robbed cause he shoulda paid over 200 bones on win end!  If he wins the Preakness, I will never bad mouth a claimer who wins a Gr. 1 race again!

I had him marked as one of the few who had a chance to run their BEST race inthe Derby, but was almost immediately eliminated as he was soo slow . Advice was the only slower horse in the race.There is an expression for this type of performence he "freaked in the mud" which is why i play virtually nothing on off tracks.I only played a little of the undercard but i did lose quite a bit on the Derby...

YOU KNOW, THE HECK OF IS that if there was only one Birdstone horse in the race....Mine That Bird...I think a lot of guys, including me, might have at least included in exotics. The fact that Summer Bird on paper looked like the better of the two Birdstone's accounted for many bettors supporting him rather than MTB.

I am going to post my final thoughts later tonight in a seperate post.  The more I think about this derby the more "shady" it feels.  I don't necessarily think the fix was in, but the path this horse took to Kentucky is a bit curious.

Lets face it, it was a weak field. The track was off, they were setting fast fractions,it set up for a closer and he had a great trip and a great ride. I could have never picked him either. Imagine,this horse was bought for 9,500  dollars, wow, it shows you dont have to spend millions on a yearling to win the big race :-)))

What really makes me sick is that I loved Pioneer of the Nile. 1  $ exacta paid over a thousand bucks, wheel 16/all all/16 and you have a nice little hit  lol :-))
