You guys are having an understandably emotional reaction to a very sad event.  Completely ignoring the double standard considering we eat so many animals ( including horse in many european countries, hell it was legal in new jersey in the 70's).

I never said it is not sad...but all you  people calling me heartless SHOW ME ONE THREAD you started when a CHEAP CLAIMING horse died...one thread ANYWHERE....so since you did not are you saying a fast horse dying is a tragedy and a slow horse dying the exact same way is not even worth mentioning?  Seriously, enlighten me.

i am both shocked and appalled by this incident. My mom used to jump horses and she told me the thoroughbreds have the thinnest of bones, when horses normally have thin bones as is when compared with their weight, which is why there are so many bad injuries. When the announcer from NBC (not Costas the other guy) said something about the injury i knew it wouldn't be good, but i couldn't believe how unprepared all of NBC's team was in covering that.

As it is right now, the sport is completely inhumane, but if there's already been 134 of them, i don't see it stopping anytime soon.

I didn't watch his interview but he had to have known the horse was down (maybe he didn't know they had to put her down), his horse bucked him off as they walked by.

It is possible Dutrow did not know the horse was dying, he won by so much he may have not known the horse behind him was hurt. I am sure it was madness after BB crossed the wire/

I did not see him after race, but if he did see the other horse died he should have behaved like his owner and first made reference to the fallen filly.

A 1,000 pound horse with ankles the size of a human, running 30 mph, with a human on its back? Horses just weren't made for that. RIP Belles.

I just said a prayer for the poor girl.  I am surprised to hear about the poor coverage and lack of class shown by the winning horse team from you all who watched.
 
That is shameful.  Should've stopped everything at that time and showed some respect to 8 Belles.

Eight belles, Eight belles............what a sad day to have come so close and have ended up being euthanized.  It is indeed a happy moment for Dutrow and related......but Ohhhh what a sad day for Eight Belles sympathizers, trainers and owners.  I have a great love for animals and the fact that she passed really breaks my heart and saddens me.  It has really cast a cloud on Big Brown's win.........but such is life........swinging on a pendulum between happiness and grief. RIP beautiful horse. God bless you all.

Maybe the fat trainer didn't help with him riding her around. There is no reason for him to be doing that they have enough stress on them when they race.  .

Race her with the other phillies on Friday and maybe this don't happen. It did though and there is nothing anybody is going to say or do to stop these type of things from happening. A very tragic end to a glorious race day, that's all.

I hate to see any horse have to be put down. But you have to remember there are thousands of races every day and its not every day this happens,its a rare occurence considering how many races there are every day at all the tracks around the world.So to say they arent made to race I dont agree with im sorry.I have been in the harness racing business as an owner and a trainer for 27 years and ive never had a horse break a bone.

Talk about the highs & lows of horse racing. Yesterday Trainer Larry Jones was on Cloud 9 when Proud Spell won the Oaks convincingly & today Eight Belles runs her last race for him.

Every race i watch a horse dies.  Am done watching anymores races.  I have been sick all night over this.  I bet Eight Belles and i feel like i jinxed the poor horse.
Eight Belles you ran a great race and you went out a champion in my book.  She died running a race just to entertain a bunch of humans that need to be entertained.

Every sport has it's flaws, Eight Belles had a terrible ending to an incredible filly, but for those of you who come on here about once or twice a year and know nothing about horse racing you need to realize the facts.  In football there have been players who are paralyzed, or have perm. brain damage.  Last year in MLB minor leagues a 1st base coach died....in sports terrible shit like this happens.  Don't come to the horse racing forum putting the sport down when you know really nothing about it.  Unfortunatly people like the ones on here that know nothing about the sport are the ones who are the first to bash it.  This occurance happens very seldom but as bad luck has it has occurred in this year's Derby and a couple of years ago in the Preakness to Barbaro.  ITS VERY RARE but for ppl who watch this sport during the big races they have seen it 2 times in the past 3 years making it seem like its common.

This is one of the worst things that has happened in racing.  I hear you when you say that this stuff happens and i  completley agree with you.  Alot of people say how dumb animals are but animals will give their life for you.  It was a good race but it carries a cloud over it.  I think this goes down as one of the worst breakdowns because of how it happened.  Its sad to see the filly laying on its front ankles trying to get up.  It gave  a great effort.  This is much sadder for me than barbaro was something thats going to stick with me for a while.  Big Brown ran a great race and is a good horse but its a sad day none the less
