Real relationships take work and effort.

For some it's a matter of being willing to do what it takes to make it work.

For some it is a matter of being able to do what it takes to make it work.

Happiness is an illusion.  What a real woman wants I stability and dependability.  Someone that will be there with her when she is not happy or things are not going well and not someone that will abandon her when things are hard.

Difficult concept for some to understand especially if hey have never got that or had it modeled to them

In your opening post you asked what it takes to make your "significant other" happy.

That was a carefully chosen term, wasn't it?

Women want a spouse who will LISTEN to her all the time and engage/commiserate

I find that one concept means more than anything else including money.

I agree with you up to a point.  As that is a what a friend can do just as well.  In my experience it isn't just listening but caring about them and showing it that you care about what they say.  But women don't just want someone that nods their head and  hangs on their every word.   At times they want to be told when they are wrong or not seeing things clearly.  The trick is to know how and when to do that and come from a supportive place rather than critical

Maybe that would be your best option, considering you misspelled "Dalai Lama" in your screen name.....

No, quite the opposite.  They wants someone strong with a backbone that won't fold under stress or things getting rough and just up and leave.  Or is too much of a door mat to stand up for her and support her.  Or will get steam rolled by external factors and conditions in life.

Like I said, it is hard to understand if you don't know what I'm talking about or never had it modeled

Fair enough, here's a free tip for next time. If you just can't live without that screen name, that's when you start with the:
    Dalai Lama 1
    Dalai Lama 2
    1 Dalai Lama
    Dalai_Lama
    Dalai-Lama
    Etc, etc......

That way, you don't look like an imbecile - Just ask "Joe Pecsi".....

Have kids, raise them well together into something you are both proud of.  My wife hates sports and I don't buy her flowers or jewellery or any of that garbage but I'm an awesome dad who loves my family and she knows it.

A lot of things make a girl happy. Top of the list is Attention.
    Tell her she's beautiful
    Tell her she's wonderful
    Tell her comforting words
Shower her with love (and gifts)
    Talk to her
    Make her feel involved....

    and the list goes on...

Well for me, making my significant other happy is easy. I but him dog food everyday and I walk him always to the park. When you say significant other I consider pets to be the answer and not my spouse. :)
