Damn Goose it sounds like Butch hit the doggy lottery when you and your wife rescued him from that junkyard. After reading your story it's very clear that his last 10 years were about as ideal as any dog could ever want, and I'm sure that he knew that.

GG....As a fellow dog lover Bro i'm very sorry. I know it hurts man but you did the right thing. You should be proud that you provided a good life for your friend....and that he loved you for it.

Damn, that is brutal. I feel for you big time. Sounds like you had the same type of bond with your dog as I do with my Basset Hound. I keep a picture of her laying in the bed with my wife next to my bunk out here and its the first thing i see when i wake up in the morning. Any chance you will get another one? That might cure the pain you are feeling...starting a new relationship.

Take solace in the fact that you were there in his last moments to comfort him.
I wasn't around for my first dog when she died and it killed knowing she died alone.
I echo your thoughts that you have to charish their lives b/c they go so quickly. My beagle has seizures a couple times a month and when she has them, I hold her thinking that it could be her last and how scary it will be when it happens.
my condolances.

Am sorry to hear you lost your best friend. I know exactly how you feel. Some people dont realize that pets really are more then just pets, they are total, loyal loving companions.
I know you will miss Butch, but he will be in your heart and memories always
God bless

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Going through something similar with my Bullmastiff, he is only 7 yrs old but has hip dysplasia. It's something that went unnoticed until about 3 months ago. They did X Rays and one of his hips is really bad. Im giving him painkillers like crazy to try and give him the best quality of life I can.
The thought of his impending death made me cry like crazy for about 30 minutes. He is a very very special friend of mine.
