The animals you eat have a home. It's called nature. They are used to being domesticated by humans because humans gave them no choice but to be herded, housed, unable to fend for themselves etc.
There is only a difference in your eyes because a cat is seen as 'more of a companion' then say, a pig, who rolls in its own manure is.
So you saved a cat. Thank you for that.
Then you went and put your incisors into the flesh of an animal likely smarter, more social and more advanced in general than the cat you saved.
You could have eaten the cat and caused less misery upon species other than humans in general by funneling your money and support into the factory farming industry.
Reflect on that for a while
Romans 14:1-5
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. ...

So god condones an animal holocaust of nearly 50 BILLION chickens (and that's JUST looking at chickens) a year virtually all who are tortured before death, but his eye is on the sparrow right?
Yes, those two things align perfectly.

What about the Lion who kills and eats a wildebeest? You feel bad for the wildebeest? I don't. Lions are efficient killers. So are humans.
This was a domesticated animal that wasn't equipped to live in outdoors.
If I wasn't eating domesticated animals, I'd be out in the field hunting my own. We are pretty high on the food chain and I don't feel guilty about that.
FYI, a buddy of mine actually bought 10 chickens (it's a LONG story involving the recent Nascar race at Talladega). He ended up releasing them into the wild before he drove down from Nashville.
I felt bad for those chickens because they were domestic and they were gonna die and they were gonna suffer. I would have preferred he have them butchered and we ate them.

And by the way, if I had been out in the middle of nowhere with no chance of ever finding the owner of this cat....and with no way of providing a home for this cat....I would have put a bullet in its head rather than let it suffer and freeze to death.
Yeah, there is an element of hypocrisy in my actions, but I am OK with that.

Another outspoken Vegan. I think the pieces are all coming together in your story Scal. It's a shame wasting your education on pointless endeavors.I understand the reasoning of your actions trying to fight for people that can't fight for themselves, but do you ever reach a point where you realize you're not actually changing anything?
Where did you graduate from if you don't mind me asking? Also, what degree?Obviously something within the arts, but I can't put my finger on it.
Hutch, obviously you did the right thing and probably more then 90 percent of the population would have done. I don't think you should have to defend your actions at all.

Time to knock this hypocritical scalabrine clown off of the animal loving high horse that he has been parading on around here for far too long.
Hey scally, how many millions of animals are killed every year so that vegetarians can enjoy a nice garden salad?
Oh, I am sorry, did that sting just a bit? You've been preaching about animals being slaughtered for consumption and running around pointing your finger at everyone chastising them about how they should be saving animals and eating carrots instead, meanwhile your lettuce heads and eggplants have as much death surrounding them as a crispy chicken sandwich from Wendy's.
Killing a chicken to feed several people
Killing field mice, rabbits, moles, and deer so that vegans can eat celery sticks with ranch dressing
But, but, but those animals were trying to eat my lettuce.
In the words of Carl Spackler, "The only good varmint poontang is dead varmint poontang"
Right Scalabrine?
Uh, not right.
No one knows what the hell you are talking about.
You advocate for an animal holocaust by eating meat. If you want to compare that to field mice, rabbits and moles in a field who may or may be killed because of the growing of crops go right ahead.
It's akin to comparing one car accident to the Nazi Holocaust hence there is no comparison for argument's sake.
What an idiotic post....
Slovak you should have more pride than to attempt to argue from such a stance.
But then again you surrendered all pride and dignity long ago with your views about race. Why change here?

You'd be a vegan today if you worked a single day in an animal slaughterhouse.
May as well tell you about it since you never will.
The rest is up to you. But you won't be ignorant by default of the message delivery.

I actually had to check into the validity of this post with some Google investigation before making a comment here, and I would like to say, well done Mr. Slovak. In fact I had just read some very recent articles that claimed that vegetarians may in fact kill more animals in ways that you had not even touched base on.
Now there is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, but scalabrine is certainly quite the hypocrite with his loud voiced opinions on the equal rights for animals and he is giving vegans across the world a bad rap.

My first job at 13 years of age was slaughtering, cleaning and plucking chickens for a local farmer where I grew up. When I was 17-20 I worked part time on a beef farm and had the opportunity to deliver cattle to the Maple Leaf Meat processing plant, I've seen it all but still fully enjoy a thick juicy steak for dinner and chicken wings while watching the game at my local pub

I admit that I didn't at first, but that poster above actually schooled you at your own game.
You are trying to say that if not for a human breeding it with the purpose of being eaten, a chicken's life is more important than a wild creature like a rabbit who was born into this world naturally?
I think you may be getting in over your head here champ.

My guess is that the closest that scalabrine got to a slaughterhouse was watching a film in 6th grade titled Where do we get our meat?

scal - As a fellow vegetarian (Daiya is making it easier to become a vegan, but I'm not quite there yet), I think that you are not being fair with Hutch. So a guy goes well beyond what an average person would do in order to save the life of an animal and instead of giving him credit, you chastise him for eating meat?
Nice work Hutch, I salute you!
I have four dogs, three rescues and one with papers (who is the least well behaved). The first of the four is Foxy who was a wild beach dog in Tortola. While I was feeding her Pizza crust the owner of the cafe came over to me and said," I'm sorry sir for the dog, but we're going to put out some poison meat tonight and get rid of her". With the help of many people in both the BVI and the USVI, I was able to bring her back to Virginia. I have never had such a loyal/lovable animal.
My other rescues include a foxhound who was emaciated and suffering with the mange when a through hiker on the A.T. found her and took her to a vet several miles away.
And a beagle/terrier who was born with four other puppies in a trailor park and was nursing from a malnourished mother when they all were rescued by a "no kill" shelter.
Even though I have three resue dogs, none of it would have been possible without the devotion and love of at least a dozen other people.

I was lost and then I was found on that topic.

I rarely talk about it if at all.
I asked hutch what he had for dinner and pointed out the incongruous relationship between believing you have done good by saving a cat and then in what is really zombie-like fashion to the animal world, gleefully sinking your teeth into their flesh and taking unmitigated pleasure in digesting them.
It's a horrific act but he's moved on in this thread as virtually everyone does who wants their Outback steak instead of having consideration for life no more or less important than your own (and given some of the people I've met on here, much less important than even fattest swine).

From the short time that I have been here, I have seen you interject your pro vegan thoughts into a few animal related threads that had nothing to do with you or the fact that you are a vegan. Just like you did with this one right here. I think something is wrong with you.

Slaughtering chickens by hand and letting them live as true free range chickens is far more humane than the large scale factory farms and slaughtering houses (although to me both acts are detestable but one clearly is much more cruel and inhumane than the other).
So, now that that's out of the way, did you ever see what goes on in person as the cattle pass through the 'kill line'?
Get back to me when you're done with your steak...

From the short time that I have been here, I have seen you interject your pro vegan thoughts into a few animal related threads that had nothing to do with you or the fact that you are a vegan. Just like you did with this one right here. I think something is wrong with you.
scal - As a fellow vegetarian (Daiya is making it easier to become a vegan, but I'm not quite there yet), I think that you are not being fair with Hutch.
I gave him credit. Go back and read my initial response.
Then I told him how eating animal flesh that night for dinner is no different than eating that cat (worse in fact) and his culture of convenience allows him to do so.
Now's as good a time to tell him as any.

So you're taking a single study and even within the article you posted the author notes the massive shortcoming of his theory and you now believe it in full.
So I'll ask you, you believe that eating vegetables kills more animals than the people that actually kill animals? Billions of them.
Tell me you subscribe to this!
