I went to a party not too long ago. A girl shows up, she was looking for her friend that lived across the street from the party. We start talking to her, she said she had just spent 30 days in Tent City for DUI. Talked about how much she hated it. She was drinking before she got to the party, had a couple of drinks at the party, and was on her way to another party and making plans to go out to a club after the game. (it was the Super Bowl).
As bad as she said those 30 days in jail were, she was driving all over the place after drinking. It makes no sense to me why she would take the chance of going back to jail. Some people no matter what you do, or what happens to them, just don't get it.
Even after talking to this girl, I still think the time spent in jail should be tough, it should be a place people don't want to go back to. If she did go back someday I would not feel sorry for her.
Sheriff Joe is not the greatest. Most people either really love him or really hate him. He does love to do thing to get on the news. I think he has done good and bad. The boys decided to profile and arrest 60 people of a landscaping company, pulling over two guys with no cause, no warrant and detained them with no proof or reason.
This of course isnt the first and wont be the last time that Joe will cost the state. There are lawsuits flying at him all the time, so even aside from the eventual payoff from his antics, the cost of litigation and defense of his civil abuses are much higher than a mere 200k.
The above poster is correct, privatizing prisons is a terrible idea, the bottom line goal of max profits goes against what the purpose of prisons are, let alone the shuffle games these private companies play shipping prisoners back and forth to maximize quotas and soak the taxpayer.

I am not sure about all the facts on them paying out the 200K, but I did hear on the news the driver of the 2 guys was not carrying a driver's license. I would think that it would have been easier to ID him if he had been carrying a license.

I did hear on the news that the driver was not carrying a driver's license. (even though I was watching the news late at night} All of the stories about it I have seen on-line really don't give any details, just says they were stopped and the 2 men contended they were targeted because of race.

They werent stopped for any infraction or reason..which means they were profiled and it was illegal, license or not (I didnt hear that it was the case though)
An officer cannot stop someone without reasonable cause/suspicion or the person breaking the law without a warrant.

It could be reasonable cause/suspicion if they were at the location of the raid. I would think that if a person is at a company that is being raided and they are not a legal citizen they would try of leave.
Maybe they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. It has happened to me before where I was close to an area where a crime had taken place and I was stopped and questioned by the police.

The underlying theory of making punishment so big that crime stops has been proven false over and over and over.
Joe talks a great game, but I live here (I think you do as well, right?) and stats show it is nothing more than talk.

your statement was the theory of tougher laws does not lead to less crime. i guess i just dont understand why you would only count laws that are tough up until a certain point but not count places where laws are tough beyond a certain point.
just so im clear, on a scale of 1-10, id place the US sentences at about a 5-7. id place the singapore sentences at a 10. you contend that theres no reduction in crime in the US in places that have sentences that are a 7 on the scale vs places that have sentences that are a 5 on a scale, thus in your opinion, having stronger sentences for crime does not reduce crime. the fallacy in that argument is you are only looking at part of the picture, its sort of like saying landon donovan is the best soccer player, ignoring the probably 20+ foreign players who are better.

The problem is this isnt the first or the last time he has been nailed for this kind of profiling, in fact I imagine he could care less if these fines and court costs are being racked up..the citizens here are duped into his song and dance.
