I've never listened to a genre before that relaxes me this much. And at the same time, it gives me energy and puts me in a great mood. It reminds me that your troubles are never as big as they seem.
Reggae is actually a life style for me anymore. I don't take anything too seriously anymore, and the music has helped me do that I think. Maybe not, but it seems like it. Two years ago the dearest friend I've ever had passed away on his 41st birthday. It changes your life as I'm sure many of you know. I laugh at my problems anymore. Fuck it. I'll work 'em out. I always do.
I could be the most laid back dude you'd ever meet. Kinda like the Dude himself. And I love it. I am lucky though and I realize that. I have a great gal, phenominal friends and many of them... good health... good job... Many people don't have all that. Especially in this economy. The point is that I know I'm lucky, and it's easy for me to be this laid back and to enjoy life this much.
Sorry for the rant. Back to the question at hand. How many reggae fans are out there? Who are your favorite artists?
I think I'll have another drink

I've been attending B.E. Mann shows for years, but just recently have been listening to different reggae artists every day for hours and I love it.

I love the music... the positive message and vibration... not always thrilled with the religion (but I am not that thrilled with religion in general in my own sense of deep spirituality)
as far as favorites I have too many to name...
I could say bob marley, but I dont like the legend album other then the exodus song... But I am a snob and think that legend is the album for people that dont really listen or know about reggae or bob marley but want to pretend like they do...
I have seen yellowman in concert twice... zunguzuguguzunguzeng....
I have also seen black uhuru, third world, israel vibration, bunny wailer, mad professor, Pablo moses, inner circle, ub40, eek-a-mouse (awesome concert), gregory issacs (2x), maxi preist, lucky dube, chacka demis and pliars... im sure there are more, but I was baked at most of these concerts...
Tell me what you like and I probably can give you some suggestions to try.

I am in a similar place in regards to reggae, Steel. I started listening to Bob Marley in junior high. I really dug the flow, and then came on to his message. This is years before I ever smoked pot.
But over the last 3-4 years, I've really started to embrace the positivity, and actually live it. We live in an instant gratification world, and it's very easy to get caught up with petty issues and ideals, on a day to day basis. Reggae music brings clarity to me, in regards to what is and what isn't important.
Since moving in with girlfriend last summer, I think I've jumped in a little deeper. Women these days are so consumed with their feelings, and sometimes I just need to get away. I always ask "how bad is it, really?"
Most of us are extremely lucky to live like we do. We need to cherish every day we have, because it might not always be. So don't sweat the small stuff, and just enjoy every day. These are things that reggae music has helped me to understand.
I absolutely dig Michael Franti. A couple others I enjoy are: Ziggy Marley, Sublime, Rebolution, Slightly Stoopid, and the Dirty Heads. Anything with that Southern California sound that Sublime started is good by me.
Been a lifelong parrot head as well. Come Monday.............

Good thread here. What a nice surprise. Artists not mentioned here previously I admire are... Alton Ellis " Mr Soul Of Jamaica". I never heard of this guy till recently. My Jamaican neighbor loves him,and gave me one of his discs. He is Old School from the 1960's Also I like the Skatalites .They play good instrumentals .Like " Guns Of Navarone" I also think Bunny Wailer does not get too much love ,and he's pretty damn good.I think his solo stuff is much harder to find than Marley's or Peter Tosh's.
