It's posts like these that show how far removed, mainly white males, and non-blacks in general, are from an understanding of the what racism is and its pernicious effects on black Americans.
First things first:
1. Racism is alive and well in 2012
Some of the guys on in this thread and many elsewhere say I'm the one who keeps racism alive. If you look at post #6, you'll see it right there in print (the accusation that I condone racist intentions or apologize or give excuses for them? Who knows what he means? Who cares?)
Well it's quite clear that racism is alive and well not only in Boston but in a broad cross-section of America as evidenced by the Twittersphere. You can even see a lot of the Twitter posters faces on other sites, the overwhelming majority of which are white.
So one of the crudest and most infamous racial terms is lobbed at a black male because he beat the team they root for. This is the visceral reaction whites who can't control themselves have. Deep down, they truly think blacks are that slur. But of course, their first defense will be "but I have black friends" and the nanosecond you hear that, you know you have a confirmed racist. Why? Because you can hold denigrating and stereotypical views of the broader black community while actually interacting with a few on a socially friendly level which is all but inevitable in a multiracial country. But is mainly those who 'sell' the black friend line that have something to hide.
Some of the guys in this thread have actually used that excuse.
2. With regard to their view of racism, intellectually lazy and/or willfully ignorant individuals typically condemn racial slurs and slurs only.
They're all here to. A guy like Holdem loves to use codified language to get his point across about the black race, but he'll never use a slur, and he believes that therefore, he is a peace-loving American who loves all races.
But in this thread, in post #22, he'll say I am on welfare and 'the man is holding (me) down.' He's not sure I'm white so when he attempts to insult me, it will be done in a subtle manner with a wink and a nod to the rest of his covers members to get a laugh at of them with a stereotypical black joke.
What is the codified language? Blacks, on covers and everywhere else, have long been stated to abuse the welfare system (which ignores the millions of whites who abuse the system but that's ok for them). There is also the perception from that they are on a street corner somewhere (playing dice, drinking, dealing drugs, whatever they like) talking about how the white man holds them back. He didn't use 'white' in his sentence but it comes through true enough. He'll deny this of course and say "I never said white so how do you know" as people laugh at him. He's been called out on this not only by me but by others as well and he responded with the typical "what me racist?"
John Zimbo used a word that was just as bad as the Tweets with Mammy" (twice) and the only reason it's not as reviled is that it's not understood as well (plus it sounds like Ma'am, a term of respect). Go look it up to see what he means and without a doubt he knows, because he used it in context. It is quite disgusting. Yet, here he is on this thread on a soapbox of sorts condemning a different slur. This is how these people work. They are bipolar racists in many way.
I could go on about D_Unit as well but why waste your time or energy on wastes of space.
Anyhow they are all out here in full force to join together and DENOUNCE THE RACIST TWEETS BECAUSE THEY USED THE WORD N******! and THAT'S JUST WRONG MAN!!!
So why are they intellectually lazy? They need racism THRUST in their face for them to denounce it. They need a slur (although Zimbo uses slurs for black women but here thinks it's disgusting which shows you how confused bigots really are in understanding any of this), a white hood, a noose or a burning cross to condemn racism.
These are outward overt forms and racism and it begins and ends there for them.
Why? It's convenient. Just denounce it and move on. It takes no action on their part to combat. Type or say "that's bad" and walk away. Expend as little energy as possible.
Unfortunately, blacks mostly don't take offense to things like this. They'll shake their head in disgust but know in their heart of hearts that this resided in the heart and mind of that person anyway, it only took a black hockey player to bring it out (or whatever else given the circumstance).
Racism requires an superiority/inferiority complex between the racist and the receiving group, initiated by the alleged superior on the inferior (as they see it, these superior and inferior groups not really existing, but for the racist they are real as everything they see).
This is where you get Holdem's comments about welfare checks and 'the man.' He doesn't use a slur or have a burning cross for his avatar and has such a gross misunderstanding of what racism is (and couldn't properly define it either), that he thinks he can use language dripping with racial undertones and get away with it. Of course, anyone with the slightest sense of what he's saying sees right through it and dismisses him or calls him out on it. Watch him rant and rave after this post.
So this outward manifestation is abruptly condemned in full force while many will then live out their covers lives saying and doing everything to defame the black race in general codified language whenever its convenient for them (except JohnZimbo who simply uses 'other' slurs that he thinks are 'ok'...just watch him...it may come in this thread).
But racism is something else and this is where white males/non-black males on covers get upset.
Racism is also any policy, practice or procedure that fosters or results in inequity because of racial identity. In this form it is institutional and systematic.
Man get a job and quit writing a fucking book every time you are offended by something. Yes this is a fucked up thing that happened so say its fucked up and move on.
