That's BS. I don't have a Facebook account(other than a dummy account I set up with my ex to keep an eye on my stepdaughter), but if I did, I wouldn't be giving that info for a job interview.

Maybe set up an over the top super religious FB page for myself, hunt for a company that asks this of the people they interview, purposely tank the interview, and then go to a lawyer saying I overheard the interviewer laughing behind my back what a religious weirdo I am. If you had a civil liberties lawyer sue if they could prove you didnt get hired because you didnt turn over a private password how could you lose that case?

They'll try to find it anyway. On my last application (4 years ago) there was a space for it. I left it blank. Didn't hear any backlash.

Depends on the password. If you're talking Facebook, technically, and employer could use that as a reason not to hire someone. It's not illegal. Certainly not covered under the Civil Rights Act. I'd say it would be covered under the "Common Sense Act," but that doesn't currently exist.

The first time I got on facebook was to start talking with an overseas relative. Once getting into the company and being on the hiring end now, our company uses it to gauge daily usage during working hours and to gain a quick character references. I haven't personally asked someone for it but we do have our computer here at the office watching who is one it during the day. I feel weird asking for it but also explain to job candidates how we need to act professioanl on those social networks since many clients will friend us.
I think it mainly stems from we are such a relationship oriented firm that many of us have clients on our personal stuff like linkedin, facebook, etc. I know it is crazy doing that but you conduct yourself in a professional matter on those social sites. It's hard not to have clients on your friends list whe you are out to dinners/games/golfing/etc. with them and they request it.
