no you cant opt out. Reason social security is going broke is because we have less and less jobs in this country. Why do we have less jobs in the country? Because the corporations moved them overseas to make bigger profits for themselves.

you still are missing the point of pensions. workers pay for the damn things so stop saying they are some free handout because they are not. <the actual design of the pension system as a whole is flawed. it always assumes that there will be more people paying into the system to pay the retiree's benefits....SS will soon be upside down just like the UAW is upside down right now>
Also your idea that if people had to manage their own 401k's they would be able to do it. That is so far from the truth, am still sitting here laughing my ass off. Theres people that dont even know how to open a checking account and all of a sudden they are going to manage their 401k's because they have to. Yeah okay. <an example...before i bought my place 5+ years ago i couldnt fix anything on anything but since i "OWNED" i couldnt call a super, etc. when i saw minor things i tried to do it myself. i studied instruction manuals, talked to salesmen at Lowes., etc. i had to do it and took pride in what i was doing>
Also look at all the millions of people who have lost their money in 401ks and other plans. Just because you have been able to manage to ward off losing in your retirements plans, doesnt mean others would have the same luck and in fact most people would be dead broke come retirement time if they had to do it.
Like i said people trade less money in their paychecks for the security of a pension. Problem is companies have screwed those things up, not the workers.
