How can I get out of jury duty?!

If you receive a potential juror notice by the your local county, simply ignore it if it does not come certififed mail.  There is no proof you received it and you can claim ignorance.  They will reshuffle you and you will be notified again about a new date and simply ignore it again until it arrives certified receipt.  You know the green form you have to sign for.  Now if if the Federal Government sends you a notice that you will be a prospective juror in FEDERAL COURT.  YOU MUST SHOW UP or you will have U.S. Marshalls searching high and low for you.  You fail to show up for this then I advise you  to bring your checkbook and toothbrush.  Depending on the Judge you might be spending the night in the can. They will find you and they dont fuck around.  That goes for being on any Federal Grand Jury, also.  Additionally, the Federal Judge asks the questions during Voir Dire so you might want to rethink any bullshit excuse you might have.  Federal Courts dont play.  Your local state court will cut you more slack.     

I just recently got out of jury duty this way.

The date I was supposed to go for jury duty I never went. About 10:00 I called the telephone # on the jury card and I said I simply forgot that jury duty was today and that I want to do it. The person was very nice and put my name back in the system for another date. I got the next date and was going to go but lucky me also got another card in the mail that said "Since you were summonsed, the needs of the court have changedand YOU ARE NOW NO LONGER REQUIRED TO APPEAR FOR JUROR SERVICE AS SCHEDULED. YOUR SERVICE UNDER THIS SUMMONS HAS BEEN CANCELED."

i told them i had to look after my daughter and there was no-one else who could do that (actually true) but they didnt ask for any supporting evidence which I found surprising.

should have just thrown out the letter when it came in the mail
did it several times and it took years for them to threaten with a subpoena to appear

 

  

Answer yes to every question during the interview process.

Ask if you'll get to examine any bloody undergarments.......

The easiest way to get out of jury duty is to explain to them that it would cause you and your family financial hardship.

either you work for someone who does not compensate you for your time missed

or that you are self employed, and if you were  forced to be away, that your business would greatly suffer.

It's pretty simple, just call the phone # on the summons, and explain the issue, and they will take you from the list. 

Even if you get out of jury duty the 1st time with a resonable excuse the dopes will keep sending you letters until you actually show up in person,just go and get it over and done with.


Getting out of it once doesn't mean they will forget about you

In my enlightened state (everyone laugh here) if you are 65 or over you can just return the notice stating that you are over 65 and want to opt out.  Also you can call and say you had a felony conviction when you were a minor but that you want to serve.  They will usually just take you off the list.  It is hard for them to check on this as juvenile records are sealed.  They could get it but it would cause them a little work so they will just probably mark you off the jury list.  Tell them (if they ask) was that you were driving drunk, hit another car and injured someone and that you fled the scene.  And that you were 15 at the time.  Or, you could always serve on the jury.

And by the way, you never know what the lawyers are looking for.  I once served on a case where a dog had supposedly attacked a mail man and injured his knee.  I've had 5 knee surgeries.  I was left on the jury, though. 

IMO, the plaintiff thought I could identify with someone who had knee issues.  I'm guessing the defendent thought that I would NOT have sympathy if I thought a guy was making it up as he went.

FWIW, they had video tape of the guy playing volleyball and $hit....it was hilarious.  The only guy who wanted to give him money was the Vietnam Vet who wanted to give him a zillion dollars because everyone is the victim.

One thing I learned from that trial?  You do not EVER want a jury of your peers deciding your fate. 

Heh reminds me of the Brian Regan joke about how getting out of jury duty is like a game show. 

When the judge asks if anyone has been the victem of a crime admit to something out-of-state.
