I was watching a documentary where a few old timers were moaning that baseball card collecting was dead etc and then i went onto the net to do some research and they sell like hot cakes on places such as ebay.

So if baseball collecting is still alive and well, My question is have any of you fellas collected baseball cards? The other question is why is baseball card collecting more apparent in America than say NFL or NHL card collecting because they make those types of cards also.

Not baseball as I always found that sport incredibly boring.

I used to collect NHL, NBA and NFL cards; particularly Topps and Upper Deck.

I used to love playing sports and watching them as a kid, and I didn't really collect them at the time as a value investment.  It was more of me being a huge sportsfan.

I just preferred collecting my favorite players from the Jets, Nets and Devils; among other childhood sports heroes.

Did as a kid from about 85-94 then got back into it last year.   Ebay really revived it, but it's not the same as it used to be.  Completing a full set is nearly impossible through buying packs/boxes because of the number of parallels and inserts.  It's either too tough to get or too expensive.  You could spend hundreds of dollars to complete a set that might be worth $40.  It's mostly all about chasing autographs and low numbered parallels.

As far as popularity by sport, it depends on who the hot rookies are that particular year.   Hockey was hot this year because of McDavid and Eichel and the 2nd tier guys like Larkin and Panarin.  Baseball was big in 2015 with Carlos Correa and Kris Bryant, even though their first 'rookie' cards came out back in 2013.   Talking to some other people I met through the hobby, they said that 2012 Football was one of the most sought after with Andrew Luck and RGIII cards.

My brother had a Wayne Gretsky rookie card.  So my idiot thief cousin who was like 12 at the time tried to steal it and put it in his pocket and the card got wrinkled.   What an idiot.  That was about 20 years ago.  Too bad card market isn't what it used to be.

I collected when I was young (70's) but didn't take very good care of most of them. Still have a lot of good late 60's-early 70's cards. Bought quite a few from the mid-80s to about 1992. Too many good ones to list. I still pull them out occasionally & look through them.
The market is too flooded. I haven't bought a pack in over 20 years.

What do you mean by full set? Like a full set of cards for each team? etc.

I think I have that card in your avatar. Is that the same set that the Pete Rozelle card was in?

So Slob, Being a Jets/Nets fan, Would that prevent you from collecting Giants/Knicks players cards or were you very specific?

No, a complete set of all the cards printed.  Back in the older days a standard Topps baseball set included 792 cards.   Fleer and Donruss would have 660.   You could buy them complete from the factory, or build the set by buying packs/boxes.

So this is the same card that my idiot cousin tried to steal and ruined.  So about 20 years ago it was worth about 500 bucks.  NOt sure why it jumped to 200,000 bucks. So my brother sold the card to my uncle who was the kids father for a few hundred buck.  Wow.

Those cards from the 60's and 70's that get the Gem mint 10 grades are skyrocketing.   A George Brett rookie from 1975 Topps just sold for $41,100.

I collected from about 1980-1992. In 1989 Upper Deck came out and I had a connection to a card shop owner and I bought a case of high number boxes for $700. Two weeks later he offered to buy it back for $900, then about a month later for $1,100. Figured I had hit the jackpot.

Within a year or so the case was worth over 4k, and I should have sold it then. Still have it today and might be able to get $1,300-1,400 for it.

No kidding....I will have to check the archives, but I have more than a few early Bretts.....was it an error card or something?

The Rozelle card was valuable a while ago.....I think that whole set will be in a few years.

Search, I have not collected in many years, but did collect vintage football cards for some time, and have a pretty good collection.

I don't consider Lambert, Stallworth, et al, to be "vintage" but if they are in good condition, and you are serious about needing some money, shoot me a PM and we can discuss
