Do you ALWAYS tip?

Oh yeah, that too. I suppose they think tipping is less of a capitalist idea (tipping based on performance) and more of a communist idea.

I'm too paranoid not to tip.

I've yet to hear a reason from those who use to be servers on why they don't tip people at Mcdondalds,Subway,Wendys etc. What makes you special?

It's not expected to tip in those places.
Oh and in McDonalds you can give money to their charity (Ronald McDonald's fund) which I think is better than giving tips.

Good question.
Guess it's a cultural thing. Nobody tips anyone in my country. But then again we don't have people working for $2 an hour.

I've never had service so bad that I refused to tip. Then again, if I'm eating at an Appleby's or a Chili's, I automatically set the bar low, as should all of you. If you're getting piss poor service at a 5-star restaurant, then you have a legitimate gripe.

I guess TdotCapper can't stand me either then since I'm from Detroit. Kinda sad too since we have never even spoke to each other.

 

The funny thing is I think the worst service I’ve ever had was at a 5 star (or maybe it was a 4 star) steak house. She never came to our table except when it was necessary (food order, bring check, etc.) and when she was there she acted like a 16 year old girl whose parents just told her she can’t go to the prom because she has to babysit her little brother. We literally had to get up to find her to get drink refills. It got to the point where we just started walking over to the bar to get our drinks.

We couldn’t believe how terrible of a waitress she was and none of us were going to give her a good tip, but when the check came we saw “20% gratuity included with parties of 6 or more.”

The worst service of my life and the bitch got a +$150 tip.

when i was growing up on the wrong side of 8 mile - I had a best friend named marshall, he always told me to watch out for a crazy mofo named T-DOT from Canada, who comes from a long line of homosexual mounties, who likes to build volcanoes for science fairs, and likes to dress up in green face paint and fondle guys in dinosaur masks---he also said he might have wild stories about how wild and crazy  he is.........

from my experience your tip is for the convenience of someone doing something for you, that you DON'T, CAN'T, or WON'T do for yourself, not because they are only working for min. wage. If the server is bad don't tip, if server is good tip appropriately. And being in tipping industry, I despise you nontippers, I do remember you and although I won't harm your food, you will for sure get your order last

I usually always leave 20% when I go out to eat at a restaurant.

Dont ever tip zero unless the server like punches you or cusses you out i guess. If its bad service they still get 15% from me. I consider 15% a bad tip. I worked in restaruants for awhile. 20% and up for me

Straightshooter you sound like one of those pieces of shits in restaurants. Like the type id give zero service to just looking at you. Thats probably why you get bad service you know?

20-25% for good to excellent service.  15-20% for OK service.  For pretty lousy service 5-10% just as an insult.  For horrendous service, I've walked out leaving nothing (only happened twice in my life).

Most service is in the pretty good to good range so I'm almost always around 20%.  No way I can leave 20% for someone who flat out ruins the experience (ie. all your group is doing is talking about the bad service during and after the meal).  Just can't do it. 

Actually, if a person eats out enough, everyone gets bad service once in a while.

If someone does a great job, they get a great tip.

If someone does an average job, they get an average tip.

If someone does a shit job, they get a shit tip.

If someone does one of the worst jobs I’ve ever seen, they get no tip.

If someone thinks they can half ass it and get compensated the same as someone who is busting their ass then they are fucking morons.

A tip is indicative of the job you perform. A decent tip is not something that’s automatic regardless of how shitty a job you do. That’s probably why you get bad tips, you know?

 

I average ~18% but don't hesitate to tip 25% for great service or %10% for poor service.  Truly awful service gets a short note from me and a minimal tip.  Been in the business so I always take care of wait staff but some service is unacceptable.

 I wait tables & bartend as my 2nd job. Base pay is $4.25 per hour.

After tips, I average $25 per hour. Now given, I am good at what I do. If I give crappy service or mess up someone's meal, I expect nothing.

It's sad to say, but I can USUALLY determine my tip , based on 1st impression of my guests. I'm almost always spot-on.
