Diver in chummed waters dies after shark bite

    • Diving enthusiast in waters baited with bloody fish parts fatally bitten by shark
    • Man was in open water without cage on commercial dive trip
    • Man bitten on leg, later taken to hospital where he died

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) -- An Austrian tourist died Monday after being bitten by a shark while diving near the Bahamas in waters that had been baited with bloody fish parts to attract the predators.

Markus Groh, 49, a Vienna lawyer and diving enthusiast, was on a commercial dive trip Sunday when he was bitten about 50 miles off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, said Karlick Arthur, Austrian consul general in Miami, Florida.

Groh was in the open water without a cage or similar protection.

The crew aboard the Shear Water, of Riviera Beach-based Scuba Adventures, immediately called the U.S. Coast Guard, which received a mayday from the vessel, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nick Ameen.

Groh was airlifted to a hospital, where he died. Groh was bitten on the leg, Ameen said, but he could not be more specific about the extent of his injuries.

It was unclear what type of shark was involved in the attack. The shark got away before anyone could identify the species.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation by the Miami-Dade Police Department. A telephone message left for police was not immediately returned.

A woman who answered the telephone at Scuba Adventures on Monday said the company had no comment.

The company's Web site says it offers the opportunity to get "face to face" with sharks. The site explains that its hammerhead and tiger shark expeditions in the Bahamas are "unique shark trips ... run exclusively for shark enthusiasts and photographers."

To ensure "the best results we will be 'chumming' the water with fish and fish parts," the Web site explains. "Consequently, there will be food in the water at the same time as the divers. Please be aware that these are not 'cage' dives, they are open water experiences."

you must be in idiot to open dive with sharks in chumed water... if you want the show about the guy that had a free dive (no tanks) he lasted with a great white that went in for a bit but he pushed off and got lucky... and he also lasted with tiger sharks  but nowhere close was any chum... chum attracts sharks that are looking to feast and not be observed.  Its one thing to free dive  with any maco, tiger, or GW but you must be an idiot to get in waters where food is near by.... he got what he deserved

    Hi All:

I live in south florida and dive and spearfish and can tell you a few things.

MY NAME IS ON THE PETITION AGAINST SHARK FEEDING IN SOUTH FLORIDA BEFORE THEY OUTLAWED IT IN FLORIDA
    SEVERAL YEARS AGO!

I HAD TO SHOOT A SHARK IN THE HEAD SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT GOT TOO CLOSE TO ME ONCE SEVERAL YEARS AGO. IT WAS NEXT TO A PREVIOUS SHARKFEEDING ZONE BY THE WAY!! DON'T SEE PEOPLE FEEDING BEARS LEGALLY ANYMORE DO YOU???
ANYWAY, THIS WHOLE THING IS TERRIBLE!
I HOPE COMPANY GETS SUED INTO BANKRUPTCY!!
AS RICH AS THE FLORIDA WATERS ARE IN SHARKS (WHICH ARE HIGHLY OVERFISHED NOW),
BAHAMAS HAVE 100 TIMES AS MANY SHARKS AS FLORIDA!
I WILL NOT SPEARFISH IN THE BAHAMAS AND WOULD NEVER ENGAGE IN SHARKFEEDING PERIOD!

VERY SAD AND THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL IN THE BAHAMAS TOO!!!!!!

You can't sue the company.  They have warnings stating that there are no cages for protection and food will be in the water while you are diving.  You have to be a complete moron to sign off on these waivers and then make the dive.  If there weren't people stupid enough to attempt it, there would be no such company.

backrol, agreed. I DM a lot in south florida and I wasn't all surprised by this story. Feeding sharks is really playing games with your life. They go into food source protection mode establishing boundries when food is being offered. If you're too close to their food they will attack almost everytme.
I'm all for training divers for shark observation with a closed bait box on a monthly only basis with well trained DM's.
    No feeding.
Ultimately the sharks bear the brunt because of these provoked attacks and they are hunted because of our greed an idiocy.

    WOOP;

YOU ARE RIGHT AND WRONG. TECHNICALLY YOU ARE RIGHT BUT I HAVE STILL SEEN COMPANIES FOLD AND GET SUED EVEN AFTER CLIENTS GOT HURT/KILLED. EXAMPLE:
GIRLS KILLED IN PARASAILING ACCIDENT WHOSE PARENTS
SUCCESSFULLY SUED THE PARASAILING OPERATION THAT OWNER DEPLOYED VESSEL IN HIGH WINDS, ETC.. (EVEN THOUGH WAIVERS WERE SIGNED). LEAVE IT TO ALL THE HUNGRY ATTORNEYS OUT THERE TO FIND AN EXCLUSION TO A WAIVER, WHATEVER IT MAY BE! ALSO POLITICAL FIGURES IN FLORIDA MAY PUT AN END TO THE PROCEDURE IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (ALTHOUGH THIS MAY BE UNLIKELY, BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF US WATER).

    EITHER WAY SITUATION SUCKS!!!

Yeah you are right.  I got certified in scuba diving 5 or 6 years ago, but haven't had an opportunity to ever do an open ocean dive.  Just been in lakes and stuff like that... nothing really exciting.  I would love to try it out in South Florida or the Carribean.  Went snorkling in St. Thomas and the Dominican and both were awsome experiences... but seeing a shark would be incredible!!

This may be a stupid question... but how fast can sharks swim?  When I was swimming near the reefs in St. Thomas noticed that they came to a HUGE dropoff where you just couldn't see anything.  Was wondering if a shark came out of nowhere would you have any chance of making it back to the reef?

I bet you Steve Irwin would try this stunt without hesitation. Some people are too daring and adventurous for their own good.  In this case, it cost the dude's life.

Mako sharks have speed burst of up to 60 mph(Marlins 80mph).....and a shark...any shark with one flick of the rear dorsal can accelerate to a mind blowing burst of speed.
Not to worry...sharks will NEVER bother you as long as you respect them and do not invade their space.

Searchwarrant, you seem to know your stuff...i have a question...Many people on here say that they would want to open dive with sharks, as long as there is no chum...Isn't that dangerous whether or not chum is in the water?  You couldn't pay me to go down in the ocean without a cage

Chum is something that is used to attract sharks..then left alone so as the sharks do not associate the chum and food with the divers. (divers enter the water once large chum has been consumed). Best way to really ecperience these creatures is to tie off a a couple of large bait fish to the top of a reef and watch motionless from a safe distance as to not interfere. That is for advanced/rescue divers only but it is quite safe.

Cage diving gives you a front row seat but it is clumsy, expensive and really not necessary unless you are surrounded the big boys. ie....great whites, bulls, oceanic whitetips, Tigers.....

All in all free diving open water blue under a slick with a floor bait box and a very competent staff is the way to observe these creatures is spectacular.

Best shark encounters are without any bait at all and completely random on a routine dive. They are actually annoyed by divers and exhalation bubble sounds, so it's great if they even hang around.

....and to further answer openwater diving with sharks it is safe. It requires a very skilled hand an eye along with your partner. No chum period...just a slick over the surface. Captain will drag a tuna head over the surface time to time to keep them around but it is not for even medium experienced divers....your bouyancy needs to be perfect and your eyes always on in contact with the men in gray suits.

Guy that got bitten didn't know wtf he he was doing and got caught up trying to to take the perfect picture...happens all the time to underwater photographers that can't dive for shit.

Been diving for 27 yrs since I was 13. Scuba and freedive.
Spearfish, lobster, etc.. Spoke with Pipin; Dove with Chad Palan Before (video spearfishing in the palm beachs).
Would love to hook up and do some blue water hunting!
3 of the most beautiful sites I've had in 27 years in the ocean were blue water hunting.
1.) 6 miles off of boca inlet 7 yrs ago and jumped in on a HUGE bait swirl with a buddy. Saw a massive school of sails just pounding the bait and fanning (turning on their sides). Against
the sun and in the blue waer this proved to be a religious experience. Lasted 20 minutes!
2.) 25 miles off of Port Everglades saw part of a broken raft. Jumped in on it and saw a school of dolphin in a huge WALL FORMATION! Awesome site. They actually looked more blue than yellow or green. Took my time and got one of the big bulls.
Silky got a bit close and darting around me and my buddy
had to unfortuantely take it out with a head shot.
3.) Swimming around some boards about 5 miles off deerfield beach and saw a bunch of fins come my way quickly; boat and driverw were 100 yds away. Almost had a heart attack but thank god they were porposie and swam around and circled me for a few minutes! Awesome site though!

I love diving and done some stuff in the Carribean and off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.  There is nothing like seeing a shark out along the reef on the prowl though I haven't seen any of the big boys mostly white tips, gray whalers, nurse etc.  They are way more frightened of you with your breathing appartus than you are of them. Most just cruise off to a quieter area.

My next goal is to dive the Blue Hole down in Belize but that probably won't be for a while.
