Simply download your movies (using bit torrent... its been discussed multiple times on here, do a search, or google it - I recommend "uTorrent")
Convert them to .avi (if their not already .avi, everything I've downloaded has already been this format)
Buy a flash drive (you want at least 2gb, most movies you'll download will be 1-2 gigs - my 4gig flash drive was ten bucks)
Put it on the flash drive, stick it in your ps3 and your ready to watch your movies!
Only problem I've had is that on my ps3 when I go to the flash drive it says 'no files found' - if you just hit the triangle button when the drive is highlighted and select 'show all files' they will be there.
Perfect quality, very easy. Thanks to t6rider for filling me in.

My best friend just got a New LED 46" Samsung TV it has built in WiFi with a USB slot and he can plug his flashdrive right into the TV and watch the movies without a PS3.
He got it from New Egg on Cyber Monday for $1,000 the next day it was back to $1,699
We still do the PS3 thing at my house. Just watched Megamind after the game on Sunday.

theres an even better way to do it without a flash drive. download this program called tversity. it basically acts as a media server and connects with your ps3 so u can transfer anything from ur comp to ur ps3 without any cords or flashdrives

I tried it, it wasn't happening. My ps3 found tversity, I went though a million steps... it just didn't work. Tried networking with WMP -- doesn't work. Maybe its my VAIO, they add all kinds of restrictions.... I remember I couldn't stream in HD from MLB.tv, turns out I have to ctrl+alt+delete, go to services, and turn of 'VAIO Power Manager', but I couldn't figure out how to get the networking to work.
The flash drive into the USB works great
...and yes, jays, I just found this out now.

I am surprised that you just found out about this. I had a post up early last year/late 2009 about this in the general forum. Now that I think about it, it got moved to the TV/Movies section...
I could have swore that you and I discussed this before. it must have been someone else...

I prefer to download the movie straight to my laptop, then plug in my laptop to my TV with an HDMI cable. It's easier than this, requires no flash drive and searching for files, and the quality is excellent. I think this is good for those without an HDMI port on their laptops.

We probably did, I don't have a memory.
I've done the HDMI thing, it doesn't work as well IMO. The resolution wasn't right, and I can't get the sound to play through my tv, and it drives me crazy having the sound come from my laptop while the video is on my tv.
I'll take the flash drive over the HDMI cable. More portable, and even if it works perfectly on your tv/computer, the quality doesn't suffer at all doing the flash drive thing.

strange.....my sound comes through my TV with no problem. You just have to change your speakers to HDMI output instead of the laptop speakers. I also don't see any distorted quality, as long as the video file is of good quality.

I have my old Sony computer hooked up to my TV in my living room and I still prefer to use the flashdrive with the PS3 because you can use the PS3 remote to pause the Movie or rewind it if you need to rewatch something.

It is nice isn't it. Plus it's portable - yesterday (great timing) I would up stuck at a friend's apartment he had just moved into that day (for about 2 hours). No internet. But hey - i got my flash drive. At least there was something to kill the time.

If this hasn't been sad, it also works this way on the xbox 360. Another way to go is connecting straight to your computer through media center if you have an xbox.

And I'm sure the HDMI is great for some - but I think my computer over-complicated it... I could not for my life figure out the sound problem, and I ran through a half dozen video settings and they were all a little bit awkward. My computer ruins everything.

I picked a 32 gig sandisk flashdrive up at Walmart last year for $76 and you can fit a good 25+ movies on one. Like you said, great for transportation, plus then if your buddy wants the movie, he can save it right to his PS3.

You definitely lose quality going from laptop to tv on hd files (ie x264's) especially if you have an on board video card.
PS3 has its limits as well or at least it did. The ps3 hard drive has to (or at least had too unless something has changed with a firmware update) be in the format where it won't read files bigger than 2 gb. You should still be able to watch HD tv shows but not movies. Unless you stream through a media server as was mentioned earlier.
The best solution is these little media players that they sell such as the O!play .....they go for like $50-100 and just plug a hard drive into them and they play pretty much every in amazing quality.

Just discovered something else you can do....In Vuze, you can copy your video file into the 'Device Playback' section on your PC and your PS3 will be able to play it remotely right off your laptop. No cables, no flashdrive, no getting off the couch . In order to do this, you have to first allow other devices to playback media from your PC. This is a setting in Windows Media Player. I fucking love the PS3

Whaaaaa? You can save it on the PS3?!
pinoy, my PS3 didn't work right either at first - just go to the flash drive in the menu (on your ps3) and instead of hitting X to select it, hit TRIANGLE and select view all (or whatever the equivalent of that is that it says, idk the exact terms)... on my PS3 it said there were no titles, but when I hit triangle and select view all there they are, and they play just fine. Hope this works for you.
