Who do you think that you are schooling here? Searchwarrant's statement was 100% true. Notice that he said "Violent Crimes"?
Perhaps if the citizens in the U.K. were allowed the right to own guns, then the Violent Crimes against them there would decrease.
An abhorrent idea to the majority of UK citizens.
The idea that those committing violent crimes, be it with fists, knives or whatever, would also have easy access to firearms, is not even worth discussion.
A starting point in reducing violent crime would not include adding guns to the mix - which in my opinion would add an extra stench of paranoia to society.
Break the UK down into countries & you'll see Scotland has a 4x higher rate of violent crime than England.
Must be all that extra strength lager.

Yes the murder rate is higher, but the overall crime rate is almost 5 times lower and this is more than likely due to the fear of the gun.
NO YOU ARE WRONG. IN THE UK THERE ARE STRICT PENALTIES FOR ENGAGING IN SELF DEFENSE (HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GUNS BECAUSE GUNS ARE ILLEGAL) SO CRIMINALS FEEL THEY CAN COMMIT CRIMES BECAUSE VICTIMS ARE UNWILLING TO FIGHT BACK BECAUSE THE VICTIMS FEAR LEGAL REPERCUSSIONS.
If guns were really an issue, wouldn't you think that the murder rate by a firearm would be much much higher than it is?
The problem with guns is that it is just too easy to acquire them. I think there needs to be much stricter laws on getting a gun. And criminals are going to get them anyways, so you can't take them away from the upstanding citizens that need them for protection.

I am not a believer in the current interpretation of the second amendment and do not support the widespread "right to bear arms" rhetoric from a constitutional standpoint (just ask SS we have gone round and round on this). That being said, this sick F&CK dressed up with a bullet proof vest, gas mask, long coat (i.e. like Bane) and walked up and down the isles and open fired on anyone and everyone (as mentioned including children). This has NOTHING to do with gun control and instead some sick F&CK. What if this guy wired the theatre with a bomb and killed everyone. Gun control would have not curbed this guy unfortunately.
Truely a sad event and I just think about all the kids that was so excited to see this movie and have it end this way. Heartbreaking!

As Eddie Izzard said, "guns don't kill people, people kill people... but I think the gun helps. Just running up to someone and yelling out BANG -- you gotta have a real dodgy heart for that to get you"

I think the problem in the U.K. is that the people there don't have anything to fear so they are more likely to commit a crime without having to worry about losing their life, thus leading to the low murder rate.
It's easy to just run up on someone and beat them up and rob them knowing that the chances of them having a firearm to defend themselves with is 0%
True that those who commit the crimes may not have anything to fear, but as a counterweight, it's also nice as a UK citizen to go about everyday life without the worry that some nutter with a gun could mow you down at anytime - unfortunately the incidents we see happening so often across the pond just reaffirm this belief.
The idea that I may have to take a gun to the cinema, just in case, is laughable (And slightly terrifying) - over here anyway.
It's a chicken and egg scenario though.
Person carries gun for protection = increased chance that perpetrator of crime will also start carrying.
Are there more people in the US per capita who wish to do harm to their fellow citizens than the majority of other developed countries? Or is it the same as elsewhere, but the easy access to guns just makes it easier for someone to act out their horrific ideals.
I don't proclaim to have an idea about the mindset of you or your fellow citizens on this issue, but from the outside looking in, events like today aren't a one-off.
Something needs to be done. And any future policies shouldn't be decided by those who have a vested interest in maintaining a fearful society.

I am fine having such a high rate of gun violence here. I wish we did not but refuse laws that will enslave me.
Bet you'd say the same if your children were in that theatre.
You're a cold bastard.

Nope. But you do everything to make cars safer, everything to bring down the numbers of deaths.
Doesn't look like you can say the same thing about guns - why would anyone need a machine gun?
You mean like making cars smaller and lighter to meet CAFE standards...........................

definitely obama's fault.
According to obama all successes are the result of government.
Don't worry though, he'll blame President Bush.

This is what I don't understand. Where has this fear come from that not being allowed to carry a gun would make you feel enslaved?
I'm not allowed to walk around the streets of London wielding a battle-axe, yet it wouldn't cross my mind that I was being enslaved.

You guys are not even allowed to carry a knife correct?
Why would you carry a knife? Unless you're a criminal....or it's work related.

Hutch I've said this multiple times, I think you're a good dude and I respect you as a poster on this board. I truly do.
However I think the fact that you would actually have your gun on you went you went to the theater (From what I understand you live in some nice suburban part of Minnesota, not exactly gang and crime infested) is a FAR bigger problem than any issues you are trying to bring up.
The fact that you (or anyone) is allowed to bring a concealed pistol into a theater is ridiculous. Obviously you would carry it for the right reasons, but HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of the people that you want to protect yourself against are also taking advantage of the lax gun laws in this country, to procure and use firearms.
If everyone just gave up the right to bear arms for the most part (Like in EVERY OTHER civilized country in the world) all the thugs and scum would not have easy access to guns and gun crimes would go way down.
But the masses feel the need to protect themselves, so they support gun ownership, which essentially enfranchises the scum of the earth imo.
Again, no-one in Europe owns guns, and no-one murders each other over there (very low murder rates compared to US). I don't blame you for owning a gun Hutch, it's your right and if you feel the need, so be it.
But the fact that you or anyone could bring it concealed into a theater is ridiculous and honestly I think advocating any sort of "I will use force to defend myself" policy is horrible. We should be focusing on getting guns off the streets in totality, not focusing on how we can all stock up on more guns to protect ourselves.....
Guns kill people. Fact. If gun ownership was reduced, so would murders in the US. Fact.

"When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation...and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act."

Law-abiding citizens who choose to carry firearms are not roaming our streets searching for targets of opportunity on which to use their “acquired power” to kill. They are just ordinary people who feel the need for self-protection. There are probably some who do it just because they can, making the point that they have the right to do so.
That does not make them anymore dangerous than citizens who do not carry firearms. It makes them considerably less dangerous than most people who drive vehicles.

Correct.
And I wouldn't want to.
It's not in the national psyche to go out with the fear that we could be a victim of violent crime.
