If you want gun control you should use other arguments - maybe the fact that around 500 kids die each year in gun accidents.

just what this situation needed was a bunch of george zimmerman tough guy gun nuts shooting at the guy in a dark, smoke-filled crowded movie theater with people running wild with the one bad guy wearing a bullet proof vest. what could go wrong there?

hutch, i'm not really taking a side on gun control.  clearly, there are no easy answers there.  but these guys are right that the people who defend gun ownership to the death and don't budge on any issues always respond that if people in the theater had guns, this wouldn't have been so bad.  i don't doubt what you're saying but you know a lot of people who own guns aren't quite so responsible.

I think this shooting is a little more disturbing in the sense that, from what I reading, this guy seems to think he's some kind of Batman villain of some sort?  He was dressed up as something when they found him and his apartment is booby trapped like crazy?

Perhaps on another day it could just have easily been a reckless driver of a crappy Renault Fuego who happens to veer off the road, straight through the theatre entrance, somehow negotiate his way past the foyer into the seating area and recklessly drive up and down as many rows as he can, taking out as many people as possible.

Hutch I've said this multiple times, I think you're a good dude and I respect you as a poster on this board.  I truly do. 


However I think the fact that you would actually have your gun on you went you went to the theater (From what I understand you live in some nice suburban part of Minnesota, not exactly gang and crime infested) is a FAR bigger problem than any issues you are trying to bring up.

The fact that you (or anyone) is allowed to bring a concealed pistol into a theater is ridiculous.  Obviously you would carry it for the right reasons,  but HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of the people that you want to protect yourself against are also taking advantage of the lax gun laws in this country, to procure and use firearms.

If everyone just gave up the right to bear arms for the most part (Like in EVERY OTHER civilized country in the world) all the thugs and scum would not have easy access to guns and gun crimes would go way down.

But the masses feel the need to protect themselves, so they support gun ownership, which essentially enfranchises the scum of the earth imo. 

Again, no-one in Europe owns guns, and no-one murders each other over there (very low murder rates compared to US).  I don't blame you for owning a gun Hutch, it's your right and if you feel the need, so be it.

But the fact that you or anyone could bring it concealed into a theater is ridiculous and honestly I think advocating any sort of "I will use force to defend myself" policy is horrible.  We should be focusing on getting guns off the streets in totality, not focusing on how we can all stock up on more guns to protect ourselves.....


Guns kill people.  Fact.  If gun ownership was reduced, so would murders in the US.  Fact. 

UK has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world, and they obviously have banned all guns. Quit talking out of your ass. Registered gun owners are not even a blip on the radar screen here in the United States.

What about Germany/France/Scandinavia/Asia etc....?

Pretty much EVERY civilized country as I mentioned has lower homicide/murder rates than the US....

6 countries in the WORLD with a higher gun homicide rate than the US.... 8 with a higher total homicide rate.  So America is 6 and 8th out of 196 countries in these horrible crime stats.....

But yeah SearchWarrant, the guns aren't the problem in the US right?  B/c of "insert random stat applying to one random country"

I'm a supporter of gun rights. That being said, I'm not a fan of ordinary citizens owning machine guns. I don't believe it should be banned, but I just discourage it.

The incident that happened this morning does not make me think about gun control at all. It makes me think of the disturbed people in this world. This guy was going to wreak havoc for society, one way or another. If not with guns, it would be with bombs (like this apartment).

Also, I know what I would have been thinking had I been in that movie theather:

1. I'm terrified and need to find some cover.

2. I wish I had my gun.

Sad part is the poor, poor shooter is not responsible for his actions. He is not well and should not be held accountable for the shootings. Society is at fault for not having came to his aid before. He needs help, i.e. counseling, possible anger management classes. Who can possible believe a sane person would have done this? A couple of years in a psychiatric institution and he will be a new, well adjusted member of society ready to resume his roll as an upstanding citizen.

Come on Liberals, where is the compassion for this victim of society???
