What do you do if you can't pay your bookie?

I think the people who think the bookie is some tough guy are the ones watching too much tv.

The bookies who are making money on college campuses and what not are intelligent enough to know you don't harm someone to get paid.

99% of books wont do shit if you dont pay them, tell them to lick your nuts, or anything else..people talk about taking a course of action, etc..but i've never seen it done, and ive seen people who owed a lot of money to supposedly "the wrong people", nothing ever happened..people should pay what they owe because thats the right thing to do and thats how the business works..you win and you get paid, you lose and you pay, it's quite simple. In my teens and early 20's i got in the hole a bunch of times and would have to borrow money from my family or max out credit cards, i never paid out of fear of what might happen if i didnt, i paid them because they always paid me when i won. It's been said a bunch of times in this thread already but i'll say it again one more time..if you dont have the money you should come up with as much as you possibly can and then work out a payment plan to settle the rest.

Ive owed books money before , Its probably been ten years since then, i was 18 and betting like a wildman,best thing is to do exactly what your doing, don't avoid him. Today is a day to accept what you have done, and figure out the quickest way to pay it off that doesnt hurt you that bad

 

for any book who would do something risking their own jail time is just absolutely ridiculous. Most of those guys make good money and to take a risk of doing something that could land you in jail for a long time would just be idiotic. Most of the guys running "books" nowadays are just average everyday guys with families and lives of their own. Alot of them work full time jobs and for these guys it would just be stupid to take a chance to lose all of that to collect a couple hundred or couple thousand dollars. There are others who actually have bosses and men above them that you would not want to stiff. My advice is that if you play with the wrong kind of fellows(for example guys that dont mind letting you put 20 dimes on a game) then you sure as hell only bet what you can afford!

Most of he time  if you get to far over your head a local mite just juice ur  debt to its paid.Ive known more than a few in the NYcity area that got way over his head  they give you a few weeks ,after that its normally 10% a week on the principle/

If its only a dime and u give up half with a excuse your good.If your not than your not dealing with a legit book,More like a runner whos tring to get his own thing statrted.

The real? is why are you betting dimes if you have a bankroll of 500 u should be betting  10 or20X instead.  (srry 50 or100 per game)

I dont believe you, thats all im saying..i dont know why some people are so bothered that i have an opinion based on my experiences that differs from yours. If you guys believe that most locals are connected to the mafia and they have a guy named Vinnie that will collect thats cool with me, i personally think you are full of shit. If a book wants to come to someones house or threaten someones wife and kids then he better be prepared to worry about his wife and kids. As i have said on several occasions, i do not think it's ok to stiff your book, i have always paid what i owed to any book and sometimes it came with great embarrasment as i had to go to family and borrow it, but i paid what i owed based on my principles. I do in fact believe you could tell your local to lick your nuts and nothing would happen to you, the overwhelming majority are not tough guys that need to be feared. I hope i make myself clear, for some reason people keep addressing my comments and feeling the need to tell me im wrong, then i come back and tell you that im right..we are going in circles.

Because your experiences are so insignificant compared to the experiences of this forum as a whole.  To suggest because you know a few guys that managed the problem that it must be the case all over the country is just dead wrong.  Remember, all it takes is ONE wrong bookie....they don't all need to be like that.

Alot of the stuff described is not violent nor is it against the law.  You are putting pressure on the client in a number of different ways without hurting them physically.  And quite often, these tactics are harder to deal with then a good whooping.

I said the overwhelming majority of books wont do anything..of course there are exceptions.

Corn Bread Red is dead now, but in Kansas City in the 60's & 70's this man had almost all the BIG action...my younger brother was one of his collectors, and a real bad ass, Lee believed in a 2nd chance, if a payment was missed, they better have something worth that payment within 24 hrs....i sold my customized 73 Toyota pickup to pay a $1600 debt to this guy....learned my lesson too.

You have got to be kidding me. One phone call to the IRS for tax evasion and FBI for taking bets on the phone will fix all those phone calls you think a good collector can make.
