You have it completely wrong. Regular Joes lose because they don't understand odds.

Most people can’t make a living from gambling because the odds favor the house, and without strict discipline and bankroll management, losses outweigh wins.

former big time bookie matt bowyer said "less than 1% make money consistently". its always been like that. it makes me chuckle when people complain about how legalized gambling ruining sports, they claim its un-bettable now, as if they used to win consistently before. 

Let's not forget that winnings are taxable and losses cannot be deducted from income. Also, you need to understand math.
