Mr Rudolph began selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to local grocery stores but was soon flogging them directly to drooling customers on the pavement through a hole cut in an outside wall.
By the 1940s and 1950s, Mr Rudolph had a small chain of successful doughnut stores that were mostly owned by the family.
Each store used the same yeast-based recipe but cooked their doughnuts from scratch.

A perfectionist, Mr Rudolph decided the doughnuts needed to be the same so built a centralised plant where the dry doughnut mix was created and from there it was delivered to each of the Krispy Kreme stores. He also built Krispy Kreme's own doughnut-making equipment.
During the 1960s, the company grew throughout the Southeast, expanding beyond its traditional roots.
Each store's design was brought into line and the signature green tile roof and heritage road sign were born.
After Mr Rudolph died in 1973 the business' growth slowed down before it was sold to Beatrice Foods Company in 1976.
In 1982, a bunch of Krispy Kreme franchisees bought the company back from its new owner and made the hot doughnut experience the priority.

Krispy Kreme's first New York City store opened in 1996 and soon after, in 1999, the company treated Californians to the delicious glazed doughnuts for the first time. In 2000, the company floated on the stock exchange and opened its first international store just outside Toronto, Canada, in 2001.
In 2003, stores were opened in Sydney, Australia, and London, England and now Krispy Kremes are dotted across the globe, from Asia and Mexico to Turkey and Middle East.
The company is also selling a range of special birthday doughnuts with white, chocolate or strawberry icing, cream and sprinkles to celebrate.
