Avatars can be changed within your account by selecting "Change Photo" under your current avatar. https://www.covers.com/account
The app is available in it's soft launched state, and would be fairly bare-bones at this time.
It does appear there are issues in removing the pop-up window when attempting to change your avatar within your account, I have let the team know of this issue. One thing that has worked in the meantime was attempting to do this on a different browser.
