Season is over: My opinion of the top 5 conferences

so maybe I am wrong.  lets go ahead then and flip flop SEC and Big 10 in the above rankings.

Only if LSU can get a damn qb worth a damn . Peterson going to the nfl, haven't heard about nevis or sheppard.  That kid from new orleans that was a freshman mathieu(sp?) is going to be great at taking peterson spot. I hope Nevis comes back but if not there is a never ending line of defense of players for lsu. I think we going to be pretty good next year

Actually, let's take this in a different direction. While we're talking about Kentucky, I can use them as an argument for the conference's strength. 

Kentucky finished 2-6 in SEC play this year. So let's just compare them to other two win teams in your top five conference. This should give us a good indication of who is best. We have

Kentucky (2-6 SEC)
Colorado (2-6 Big XII)
Texas (2-6 Big XII)
Cincinnati (2-5 Big East)
Colorado State (2-6 MWC)
UNLV (2-6 MWC)
UCLA (2-7 Pac-10)

Is there anybody except Texas that you can argue is better than Kentucky? And even Texas is a tough argument--losses to Iowa State and UCLA don't make me a believer. And UK's win over Carolina is better than anything anyone else on that list has on their resume.

How about this as a top five:

1. SEC. Alabama finished 4th place in the SEC West. They then beat the Big 10 co-champ by 30. Also, the 10th place team is better than all the other 10th place teams. 

2. Big XII. Yeah, Nebraska choked in their bowl, but they had a solid team this year, as did Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Even the last place team picked up a non-con win over a bowl team (Kansas over Georgia Tech). 

3. Pac-10. Only conference with two top five teams. They don't really have the strong third option of the Big Ten, but they don't have an immediate dropoff either. Teams like Arizona State (one point loss to Wisconsin) and Washington (bowl win over Nebraska) were at least competitive against tough non-con teams. 

4. MWC. Utah's loss to ND was a letdown, but they're really a solid team. San Diego State is a strong #3, and were two egregious calls from being 9-2 (with close losses to TCU and Utah). BYU woke up late in the season, and Air Force had been nothing but solid. 

5. Big Ten. I thought about putting them above the MWC, but that would've just been big conference bias. The MWC champ is better than the Big Ten champ (as proved in the Rose Bowl). Ohio State would beat Utah, but I'd probably take SDSU over Michigan State. Nobody outside the top three finished anywhere near as strong as Air Force or BYU. 

Thoughts?

your are definately entitled to your opinion.  but SEC is number one. that conference championship alone goes to the BCS NC game.

On what basis? Wins? Good wins? Lack of bad losses? 

Kentucky (6-7)
Good wins: South Carolina, Louisville(?)
Bad losses: Ole Miss (non-bowl team), Florida (blowout to unranked team), Georgia (DD loss to unranked team), Pitt (DD loss to unranked team)

Cincy (4-8)
Good wins: Louisville(?), Miami (OH) (?)

the big 12 is better than the big 10?? the big 12 was foul this year.
and if you are comparing conferences you cant just compare the top 2 teams from each conference.  even so with the mountain west you think utah and tcu are better than wisconsin and ohio state..so you think air force and san diego state are better than iowa and michigan state and teams like new mexico, wyoming, and unlv are better than penn state, illinois, and michigan.....cmon man

Why do you accuse me of doing something I explicitly didn't do? I gave plenty of time to the mid-level teams of each conference discussed. 

The Big 12 had five legit top 25 teams, and Kansas was better than Indiana, Vanderbilt, or Washington State. 

If you take the Big Ten top nine against the MWC top nine, the Big Ten wins easily. But the Big Ten has 11 teams. If you match the top fives and the bottom fours, it's much closer. I'd say the MWC takes 3 of the top five (TCU over Wisky and two of SDSU/AF/BYU over Iowa/MSU/PSU) but probably loses 3 of the bottom four (although Purdue and Minnesota could certainly have lost to Wyoming and. . . anybody). So the Big Ten is deeper, but I rate the top half as a little more important than the bottom half. Certainly reasonable disagreement there though.

Big 12 ??

Mizzu losses bowl game to Big 10 school

K State losses bowl game to Big East school

Nebraska losses bowl game to Pac 10 school

Texas A&M losses bowl game to SEC school

Baylor losses bowl game to Big 10 school

OU (over weakest BCS team with lame duck coach), OSU, and Texas Tech win bowl games, but how does the conference be #1 overall with a 3-5 bowl record ?

you're already seeing what other people think..... the SEC and Pac-10 are the best conferences, although both were below their usual standard.  the Big 12 is probably closer to them than usual, but the past has shown definitively that the Big 12 is not on the same level once they get into the bowl games.  the only reason the Big 12 performed well this year is because none of them played against any real competition in the bowl games.

if you are basing your rankings on SU records in bowl games, you are making a mistake in your analysis.  i'm really not sure how someone could come to the conclusions you did......

I didn't have them #1 like he did, but bowl record isn't everything. The SEC was 5-5 and the MWC was 4-1, after all. Of the top five in the conference, the only one that was hurt in my estimation by their bowl game was Missouri, because I thought they were better than Iowa. Nebraska was in an obvious letdown situation playing a team they'd beaten by 40 the first time. Texas A&M was just playing a damn good opponent.

OU's bowl win over Uconn is nothing short of hilarous. UConn was really happy to be in a BCS bowl and it was a total mismatch. This thread is ridiculous. ANd Utah is garbage.

Auburn, Arkansas, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU were in the top 25 all year and these teams play each other, hmmmm.  this goes for a combined 45-8 overall record!  Big 10 behind them and Big 12 waaaay behind them.  Not even going to comment on your Mountain West being 2nd.
