Now that the line has now shifted to Buffalo -1 from an opener of -2.5 things are shaping up pretty much as I expected, with the public slightly favoring the 6-3 OU Bobcats versus the 3-6 Buffalo Bulls.
It is pretty hard to argue that a 3-6 team that is playing without their starting QB would win in basically a pick'em situation versus a team with a 6-3 record. However, that is what I am going to do. The Buffalo Bulls are going to win this game tonight by a TD or more.
These teams, on paper, appear to be going in opposite directions
and I 100% agree. However, unlike almost everyone else, I see it as a Buffalo team on the way back up and OU on the way down.
OU is a team on the way down.
Here is why. Although OU has won 4 of the last 5 SU coming in I see
some very bad things happening on the way. Coming into tonight, in the
last 4 games, the combined SU record of OU opponents is 7-22. The Last
two games OU played were a loss against 5-5 Kent State and a win
against 1-8 Ball State.
However, looking at these two final scores is very different then
knowing how we got to them. For instance OU scored only 2 TDs in these
last two games. Only one was scored by the offense. The other was a 87
yard punt with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter against Kent State (a
game they were losing by 17 points at the time.)
In their last game out, it took a late game OU TD drive (with 3:11 to
go in the 4th Quarter) to narrowly escape lowly Ball State (1-8 SU).
BTW.. that was OU's only offensive TD of the last 8 quarters of
football and if OU didn't score the TD they would have lost SU.
Despite winning the game, OU allowed Ball State to rush for 169 yards
on 38 carries (4.4 per rush.) In addition, Ball State held the offense
in check holding OU to 4 of 14 on 3rd down attempts (29%) and forcing
them to settle for 4 FGs.
Though the Kent State game looks respectable, OU loses 20-11...OU delivered what was a close to being the worst offensive performance I have ever seen in a college football game. OU rushed the ball 29 times for -9 yards (avg -0.3 per carry.) OU was doubled up in yardage by Kent as the Golden Flash put up 372 yards to OU's 164. OU also spread around the misfortunes as both of their quarter backs tossed interceptions in the game (a combined total of 3) OU was 3-13 on 3rd downs (23%).
Lets talk about a team on the way back up. Buffalo. Lets face it, coming in this was a team that was supposed to challenge for the MAC East Title this season. Clearly after losing several key players and suffering the demoralizing loss to a somewhat new bitter rival, Temple, Buffalo was clearly on its way to hitting rock bottom. They reached a point now where they are starting to rebound back up. Last weeks debut of Freshman Running Back Jeffvon Gill was a prime example of excitement being re-injected into the program. Gill came into the game for banged up RB Ike Nduka, and proceeded to put an an offensive display in the 3Qtrs he played compiling 172 yards on just 23 carries (one of which went for 6 points). Although it is hard to remember, due to the fact Buffalo lost to Bowling Green, they did manage 47 rushes for 262 yards in the game (411 total yards of offense).
Tonight Ohio may be in for a rude awakening, as will the people who bet them. OU will continue to struggle on offense against a Buffalo team that will be able to move the ball on the ground with New RB gill on their home field.
Despite all the talk about the Buffalo QB suspension of Zach Maynard for the 1st QTR...having played a D1 college sport myself...though this looks bad on the outside...most guys on the team are probably more motivated to play for Coach Gill tonight then ever before... Turner Gill is not letting anyone break the rules (no exceptions for certain players) this sets a great example for the rest of the guys who are doing it the right way and are sick of the antics. Gill is righting the ship and not taking any Sh**. The suspension is only 1 Qtr, but speaks volumes to the players accused and the rest of the team. QB Maynard is going to be very ancy watching the ESPN cameras on the sideline the first quarter. Look for great things from the 2nd QTR on.
I am all over the Bulls -1.

How does a team rush for -9 yards in a game (on 29 attempts)???? They weren't playing USC either Kent was 4-5 SU going in and flat out made OU's Offense their B**ch.

why did the coach suspend the qb for 1q when is supposed to suspend him for the whole game? its bc the coach knows that he wont have a chance with the backup QB....
OHIO is the play (use this one its better :D)

I agree m, also Buff will learn from their mistakes last week v. BGSU. - No Blocked punts, full 60 minutes (defense wont give up a TD on the last drive). I like what Gill did, now granted OU has a better rush defense, I still see the Bulls putting up 3 TD's and a FG, to OU's 1TD and 2 FG's.
24-13 Bulls

How is Ohio going to score enough points to even keep it close?
1 offensive TD in the last two games versus teams with a combined SU record of 6-15?????
4-5 Kent made them look like a High School JV team for 57 minutes. Then they come out and need a miraculous finish to beat 1-8 Ball State???
Good Luck winning with that squad.

Because sacks count as rushing attempts and they got sacked 7 games for a lot of negative yards. Almost all were sacks of the 3rd string QB. Still a pathetic game.

m15-still thinking about this one, but I always appreciate your take on these games. Good call on the Broncos under last night by the way, a veritable defensive slugfest.
As for tonight's game, if Buffalo can play a complete game and not have a punt blocked and returned for a TD, they will win this game. Ohio has been struggling in the red zone especially and they are experimenting with a new offense. I think Turner Gill will have them ready tonight to derail a Bobcats team that is flying a little too high right now.

Things happen bro... but I don't bet on punt blocks. Frankly, even if OU gets one...they can't keep up tonight. I have seen OU in action and they are in big trouble...big trouble.
