California/Nevada - Tonight's game should be a good one to watch. Can the Cal D finally step up and stop a dual threat QB, can the Nevada offense keep running like a well oiled machine and score on their next possesion? We shall see.
Lets start with the
Nevada Offense v. Cal DefenseNevada is returning an abundant of talent on offense, and it has shown in the fact that they've only had one three and out this season and scored on every possession against Colorado State. Their dual threat QB is a stud, and at 6-6 he's not only a threat to run, but to throw as well. Unlike many teams (i.e. Michigan) they have a 5-11, 220 Senior TB that Cal will have to worry about as well. With three OL starters returning, and then averaging over 300 lbs, they could have some serious success tonight. Nevada has two receivers at 6-3 and one at 6-1, it should be a good one to watch if Cal wants to man up to stop the run as their DB's both stand at 6-1.
On paper, this looks like a pretty good matchup......if ever a year for Nevada to beat the Pac-10 it is how with their Senior ladden offense. I didn't know which way to go until I looked at Cal's last to meetings vs. a dual thret QB. Oregon and Washington last year, and Masoli and Locker tore them up!
I do think Cal's corners/secondary will match up well against Nevada's receivers, the only problem is that Nevada runs the ball 40 times a game. And with Cal losing 4 out of their front seven from last year, I see Nevada having a lot of success in this one.
Cal Offense v. Nevada DefenseCal is bringing back their Senior QB (Riley) and 4 of their 5 OL from last year. They lost their stud backfield, but did pick up top recruit Keenan Allen. If you just look at the score from the Colorado game, you would think total domination (but as Lee Corso would say) not so fast my friend! Cal only lead 18-17 on FD's, had three 3 and outs and were stopped on downs on 4th and two from the Colorado 39 (and that was with the score 7-0 in the 1st quarter). It was the 5-0 turnovers that made a difference in this one.
Nevada's defense is playing with 10 upperclassmen (Jr's or Seniors) and their only Soph is a 6-1 220 strong safety! They return 3/4 DL and 2/3 LB's along with BOTH corners. They should match up well against the Cal O. Don't get me wrong....they won't shut them down, but they should match up well.
What this comes down to is does Nevada finally have enough to get over the top against a top notch program. They trailed only 34-26 in the 3rd Quarter AT Boise last year (in the last game of the year when Boise was running like a machine.) I think Nevada has enough upperclassmen 19 in their starting 22, and enough talent on offense to take them over the top! And the three 3 and outs for Cal's offense plus the stoppage on 4-2 (it was 3-2 and they threw 2 incomplete passes) is enough light to give me some hope that Nevada can slow them down enough.
The line's fishy and I think I can find enough reasons to play Nevada tonight as I really don't see Cal stopping their offense.
