SMU vs. Pittsburgh

I have leaned SMU in this game ever since it was announced, but I have spent all morning capping this game, and I cannot make a case for the Mustangs.

Pitt has played a far more difficult schedule, and aside from the TCU game early in the season, SMU has not only lost to every good team they've played, they've been blown out by every good team they've played.

SMU ranks last in college football in turnover margin and completely folded down the stretch going a perfect 0 & 6 ATS.  Even worse, in their 4 losses to good teams down the stretch, they averaged a whopping 7 ppg.

There are some things I can point out in SMU's favor such as they excel in the passing game which is the Pitt's weakness on defense, and that SMU's defense does a great job of getting the opposing team's QB, and Pitt was abysmal in protecting their ranking last in college football . . . by far.

That said, I just can't get past how each of these teams faired against tough competion, how well Pitt has played down the stretch versus how poorly SMU has played down the stretch.

I think Pitt is the right side here.
