…accusing a booster of buying 5-star recruit Brent Calloway. Amoung the allegations made was that the booster: made cash payments to his dad, paid the family’s mortgage, bought him a car, and promised of $1,200 a month.
Now take the rumor for what it’s worth because it is coming from an Auburn writer and it’s about a recruit that flip-flopped his commitment from Auburn to Alabama…but if true WOW! They didn’t even buy players that much stuff on Blue Chips.

The name "Albert Means" is still a punchline in SEC country, mostly as a symbol of the unabashed graft that defined his recruitment -- a player who was literally sold by his high school coach to the highest bidder. That winning bid came from a Alabama booster, Logan Young, who allegedly paid the coach $150,000 to steer Means to the Crimson Tide and spent the rest of his life attempting to avoid a prison sentence as result. (Young met a grisly end in 2006, though police said the bloody scene at his home was the result of an accidental fall.) Another recruit, Kenny Smith, was reportedly paid $20,000 by two other 'Bama boosters; an assistant coach, Ronnie Cottrell, received two loans from Young totaling $56,600. A repeat offender, Alabama narrowly escaped its own death from the NCAA, accepting a two-year bowl ban and major scholarship reductions instead.

The University of Alabama has acknowledged 27 NCAA secondary rules violations in its athletic department over the past year, 14 of which were due to impermissible text messages or phone calls to recruits.
The NCAA places calendar limitations on when coaches are permitted to initiate contact with prospective student-athletes.
Secondary violations typically do not draw penalties from the NCAA unless an institution shows a pattern problem with the same violation. Rather, they are normally handled through correspondence with the NCAA showing corrective action by the institution. In most cases, corrective action includes rules education and a letter of admonishment. Often, coaches are also temporarily forbidden from contacting the recruit in question!
Football violations included a student-athlete who received his scholarship check prematurely, a coach who prematurely accepted Facebook friending requests from two recruits, an impermissible text message sent to a prospective student athlete's father and impermissible documents provided to PSAs.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions placed the University of Alabama on three years' probation for "major violations" uncovered in the school's 2007 textbook investigation.
UA, a “repeat offender”, according to the NCAA, was forced to vacate football victories from games during the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons in which one of seven "intentional wrongdoers" participated. Selected individual records in men's and women's track and men's tennis were also vacated. There were no scholarship losses for any Alabama sports program.

Because the damages are presumed, it is hard for a jury to devise a uniform method of valuation. That is why a plaintiff can only obtain nominal damages at trial, thereby precluding compensatory damages absent proof of actual harm. Of course, the Plaintiff is free to seek to prove actual damages, which one would hope would be greater. However, that is often not possible.

ESPN's Alex Scarborough has a very interesting article today about the growing size of the support staff in the University of Alabama Athletic department and how that has led to the recent success of the school's sports teams, particularly football. According to the report, there are 146 non-coaches working in the department and between 2009 and 2011 the budget for them jumped 31.7 percent, to about $18.1 million.
How this helps Alabama's teams succeed is demonstrated by Coach Saban's "system" in the football program, Scarborough argues. Saban uses the structure of his support staff to maximize the effectiveness of his coaches.
