How hard is it?.....Perhaps YOU are the "stupid" one......
Just post a play like everyone else. Much easier that way - especially when I have my own database to run and 5 other covers threads to check.
Just sayin...
I thank everyone for your help. Here is my spreadsheet that I hope eliminates the confusion. It varies slightly from what "Zumbala" posted. My formula will result in a positive, or a negative value. If the number is red....bet dog, if the number is in black...bet favorite.
Please check and let me know if I am correct.
S B C=[B-S]
Date Team Shirley Book Delta
Tm #1 -4.0 -8.00 -4.00 < Red # = Bet Dog
Tm #2 -8.0 -4.00 4.00 < Black # = Bet favorite
Tm #3 -1.7 -5.00 -3.30 < Red # = Bet Dog
Tm #4 -0.6 3.00 3.60 < Black # = Bet favorite
Tm #5 -5.1 - 13.50 -8.40 < Red # = Bet Dog
2-10 Idaho St 2.7 6.00 3.30 < Black # = Bet favorite
Shirley had Idaho St at +2.7, line was +6, bet favorite.
Thanks,
Dean

Hi Pauly,
I replied so send me a message. BTW, what part of Ill are you from. I am originally from Gillespie, about 50 miles S of Spg field, just off I-55.
Been in SC for about 50 years now. I don't know if I have the spreadsheet mastered or not. That's what I am hoping some of the experts can help with. I want to be able to plug in the numbers and have it tell me to play the dog, or the favorite. Once it's set up it should be error proof as far as the math goes.
I await your message.

Thanks for your reply bigrick. It has been a while since I have been called a moron, which MAY be true. However, it the MORONS like you that are always trying to prove they are smarter that you are that make me SICK. Some people just take longer than others to catch on to a concept.
For your information, I have put together many spreadsheets. As I said, I want mine to crunch the numbers, compute the Delta, and based upon it being a positive or negative number, then say either Bet - Dog, or Bet - Favorite. I was simplying asking all the Albert Einstein's on this forum, liked yourself, if my number crunching formulas were giving me the right conclusion.
I await your smartass reply.

First off I don't see the problem with converting Shirley's #'s into plays, but it appears that a lot of people do. So maybe your program could eliminate hundreds of questions on how to do the simple math.
However, there is an issue with your program.
First of all Shirley only posts the winners with her #'s. She would not post Idaho St. +2.7. She would post their opponent with a 2.7 next to it that means she thinks Id St.'s opponent will win by only 2.7 as opposed to the book's line of -6. If she posted Idaho St with a 2.7 next to it, this would mean that she thinks Id St will WIN by 2.7. This means she favors them by 2.7 points whereas the books have them at +6.
This is a huge discrepancy. In the first example, if Shirley listed Id St's oppenent with a 2.7 next to it, the delta would be 3.3.
In the second example, the delta would be 8.7 signifying a much stronger play.
More confusing is you write after the Id St line that we should bet favorite. But in this example either way, Id St is the dog.
Your program should be revised as follows.
A.) Just put every team in the left column that appear in Shirley's post. These are who she thinks will win every game. This is regardless of who the favorite is. Sometimes her line will have the favorite winning, sometimes her line will have the dog winning.
B.) In the next column, which is Shirleys Line, always put the number in as a negative. This is because every team on the list is a team Shirly thinks will win.
C.) In the next colum, put the Books number as a negative or positive. If the team name in the first column was a favorite, enter the number as a negative. If it was a dog, enter it as a positive.
D.) In your last column, something is screwed up as well. In Team #4, you have Shirley favoring Team 4 at -.6 but the book has them as a dog of 3. So, Shirley thinks a dog of + 3 will win outright at -.6. This would mean play the dog, with a delta of 3.6, and to not play the dog.

Understood JMac. I have read people, including myself, explain the system for the last 5 days. My advice to anybody who doesn't understand is to go back and read through all of Shirley's threads. You should be able to gather enough information to get your head around it.
The more pressing issue is when will Shirley come back on here and post her numbers? She was on a roll. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that she pops up tomorrow. As for tonight's games, guess I gotta do this on my own. Nova -2.5 (bought a half point).
